Are Iron head covers girlie and as bad as novelty head covers ??
I have just bought myself some new irons and thought I may actually try to take care of these ones but dont want to look wet !!?!?!?!

Dont do it!

For me iron covers are only used by people that leave plastic sheeting on their sofas so they dont get dirty or make visitors wear slippers inside the house!

Lifes too short...

I had a feeling I may have received this response. Thanks for that Rob, just the one negative is one too many for me.

On the course no (unless you have some super sexy blades) but in the car on long journeys or going on holiday with your sticks yes.

I used some for a while until someone told me about why they are bad, unless the head is bone dry before you put the cover on you are just trapping the moisture onto the head speeding up the rusting process.

Since buying my first set of graphite shafted irons a few years ago, I have always used head covers on my irons and keep them on when playing. I make sure I buy the longer ones that go right around the neck and protect the shaft as well. I have been using my Trilogy irons now for some 4 years and the shafts still look new.
You don't think twice about using them on your woods, so why not the irons? After all, we only use them on woods nowadays to protect the graphite shafts don't we?
I have never had any adverse comments from people I have played with for using them, most people don't even notice, they are too busy concentrating on their own game.
I have just purchased a new set of Di7 irons, graphite shafted again and the first thing I ordered was a new set of covers as my old ones were beginning to look a little tatty.
I don't think they are "poofy" at all!

Smiffy Head covers on Woods are to stop the head getting dinted or bashed.

I dont bother with Irn head covers its just to much messing, I do have a set for travelling though!

I wouldn't bother. I had them once and lost the odd one on my way round wich just....fell off!!

Then that messes the whole bag up. You can't have covers with one missing...looks stupid!

Thats just my experience.

I think they were originally introduced when "woods" were made of wood and were used to stop the damp and rain getting to them and making them split/splinter etc.
They don't really serve any useful purpose nowadays other than keeping them looking nice as you mention.
But I can't see what the difference is to be honest. Why protect a set of woods costing maybe £400.00 but leave a set of irons worth as much, if not more, to get hammered around?
I've seen the graphite shafts on some of my mates clubs marked and worn so much where they have been rubbing on the side of the bag, that they've taken a shot a bit "fat" and snapped the shaft in half!

The other thing is that irons will suffer more damage when playing shots than they ever possibly could just from bag chatter.

Think of the sort of lies irons get hit off sometimes? I have hit off of gravel & paths before so sod it, let them make that lovely sound and show the beauties off!

I'm not worried about the face of the club so much, although I won't deliberately set out to "ding" it unless I have to.
I'm more concerned about keeping the shaft in good condition.

£850 quid AP2's + bag chatter = a lot of bag chatter,
I dont care what anyone thinks when it comes to protecting my investments, this is by far the most Ive ever spent on irons alon (last most expensive set were £600 x-12s from the usa back about 9-10 years ago)
For the rich folk who have all the gear and no idea, clubs are easy come and easy go, to me I want gorgeous irons/drivers etc to stay that way. Forged irons loose their sleek looks when they get battered, if I wanted that I'd have waited and bought someone elses and saved myself a few hundred.
Imagine owning a car and just allowing people to lean on it, let cats scratch it and put it through machine carwashes daily, it wouldnt be looking too pristine for very long and on the classier models that would be magnified.

Big_russ, you might be onto something! :D I call it my pocket, I keep my iron cover (of the club in use) in my pocket until im walking again and put it back onto the club after a wipe and then back into the bag.

I also use them and keep in my pocket until it goes back in the bag. Only use them on my forged clubs, my cast X20's just chatter

They do mark when they hit together

Must admit I bought some when I got these irons. But I didn't like using them when the clubs were wet, as pointed out above.

I also like my clubs especially the R series wedges, why do I want to cover them!

What I do when I get good enough for something like the MP52s, I don't know. Cover and protect, or clatter and stratch, but at least I can look at them!
