Hi all

I have recently asked to be vice captain of our friendlies (non-league) team for next year. We play fourball better ball (matchplay) against a few other local clubs throughout the year so it's a bit of fun. Nonetheless, we want to win! We play six teams of 2 v 2

I want an idea of what people's opinion is of drawing pairs for the matches. Should we look to put high and mid/low handicappers together or pair people of a similar handicap? Anyone can play so we have some 28 handicappers downwards to about 15/16. Never really any single figure handicappers unless they are covering someone last minute. Usually the same said for all other teams who play us as well so it's generally evenly matched in ability.

Happy golfing

Jon

Id go for low handicaps paired with high handicaps, thats my preference.

Id make sure your mid range's are paired together...

For example:

10 h'cap paired with 28 h'cap
11 h'cap paired with 27 h'cap
12 h'cap paired with 26 h'cap

etc etc etc

It depends how "friendly" you want to be. I play in a lot of this sort of match and our captain will usually go for a mix of low/mid or mid/high. Sometimes he'll put known partnerships together but I'd play it by ear game by game

We play similar and it was all drawn out of a hat. Can't complain if it is random. We have a range from 28 down to 15. Although I got the short end of the stick playing with a guy who just started and magically got given 22. He got 4 points one week and maxing out at 14 which he was delighted about.

But hey, its all fun and ill take the wooden spoon with pride at the end.

I'd put people together who get on well, regardless of handicaps.

If people don't know each other, pair similar types of people i.e. Chatty, quiet, go for it, sensible etc

It's friendly, don't try and make it something else.

Follow convention, no suprises or sources of conflict.

Your main job is to ensure the continuation of these matches in a friendly manner, let the golf make its own competition rather than you force it.
