Love this time of the year - lots of good courses at good prices when playing in the opens.

Next week I am playing my favourite course again

http://concrawood.ie/Home

If you are ever in Ireland / Northern Ireland you MUST play this place - €30 to play an weekly open and you really do get a massive bargin at that.

And after than http://www.rockmountgolfclub.com/Course/coursemap.php

Now all I need to do is get the ball in the ole - simples (haha)

Does anyone else play many opens?

I try and play 8-10 events a year around Surrey - you just get a better standard of player and person in these events than your regular monthly medal especially when you get the dreaded "PFH" in the next column.

Don't get me wrong, we were all there, but I once played a medal when this other guy shot 68-64=132. For 18 holes. And then asked what handicap he might get....

Best Opens in Surrey are Burhill and Merrist Wood. Worst used to be Laleham and The Buckinghamshire but they don't do them any more. Played in the latter once with Mark Bright off the BBC and they had holotined the greens the day before.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does "PFH" stand for? :)

Playing for handicap to get his cards in.

Hi there, it is not ignorance - it is just the fact that we all 'text speak' nowadays - so initials are used.

It is when a player is playing a comp but has not yet been allocated a handicap so he marks his card 'Playing for Handicap' (PFH)

Paul obviously never did this or shot 35-35 =70 when he was PFH and therefore played better than his handicapped marker, or he would have a little more consideration for players coming into our game!!

I think you are being a liitle tight on Paul, 132 in all honesty, unless he was a junior going round the full course, noone should be shooting that, if they do, then they should either be getting lessons or joining as a 5 day member (which he could well have been doing). 132 means a handicap of around the half century and seeing as 28 is the best a man can get (GILETTE!) he just isnt going to be competitive.
Noone flukes a hundred and thirty two shots on one card, so asking about handicaps shows a little greenness and lack of understanding of how golf works.
Give the guy time and he wil be down challenging 100 for a proper handicap though.
Anyway, don't jump at guys just because they have a different opinion.

Thanks for that.

Whilst it can be frustrating playing with someone who is hacking around, we've all been there. I remember the incredible patience shown to me when starting out so I always try to be as encouraging and supportive as I can.

Hi Brendy... I don't have a different opinion to Paul at all or jump on him - I just do not understand his lack of tolerance of golfers entering the game.

Sure the guy must have taken a lot of patience to play alongside but so must I when playing with my plus handicap pals. I would hate to think that they come on here and slag me off for being a worse player than them!!

I think we all have to start somewhere and encouragement may be better instead of complaining on a site other less able golfers use as they may feel fear of being drawn with a Paul.

Like you I hope this new guy gets down to sub 100 soon but has his cards marked by more understanding partners than Paul, during this journey.

I remember playing in the Nairn GC 4 day open, one on my partners was from Royal Musselburgh GC, off 6ish, he played Ok first day but had a mare on day two of the qualifying rounds.
He must have lost 10 balls but this meant we searched for maybe 18!! Now work out that loss of time on the course at 5 mins a throw!! On finding his ball on the latter part of the round he also was no longer interested and showed it in his attitude- not a nice companion to have in a three ball -and he shot a 3 figure total off his low handicap! He was also in full knowledge that I was possibly leading the qualifiers but, I suppose, he wanted his monies worth.

Give me the new guy shooting 132 anyday!!

I'll be playing at my previous club's (Kedleston Park, Derby)open next month.
Last year I went round in 94 of an 8 handicap.
I had the dreaded snap hooks for the 1st time in about 5 years.
Hopefully this year I'll play a bit better.
