Watching BBC breakfast news and it was mentioned that they are considering paying the prize money in dollars. One of the reasons is the falling value of the pound. They have to keep the prize money competitive etc etc.

Eh.

I would play in the open for nowt and if I won it I would expect nowt apart from the claret jug. I would hope that pros would want to play the majors for the prestige of winning one of the big four. Not because they won X pounds sorry dollars.

that's because you already have a job. probably half the field playing in the open will be struggling golfers

I agree whole heartedly. It's The Open, played in Britain. We are paid in pounds sterling, so should the prize money to those who take part.
Next authorities will be wanting us to drive on the right because foreigners might forget we drive on the left.

Nah am retired now, pay um in bus passes 😁 I would be in the half that are struggling golfers.

That would be a particularly stupid reason to change. Exchange rates move all the time. It could swing the other way in a weeks time. Will they change year on year? Sad to say but this sounds more like a sop to encourage top Americans to come over. That way they don't "lose out" if the exchange rate is working against them. Very sad if it happens. The Open is in Britain and the winner should be paid in the local currency.

It's a major... what more encouragement do they need? If some don't come stuff them

If any yank doesn't come over because of money then they shouldn't be invited again -

Entry is by qualification, not invitation and some foreign players (Not just Americans) do not take up the spot that they earned. Has happened for years.

I think it's a bit naive to believe it's not about the money, to us it maybe the holy grail of golf, but to those earning a living from it you need to attract them, only one a year can win it and a bigger prize fund attracts the biggest players, the biggest events have the biggest prize funds, as for it being in dollars it's probably the worlds major currency and makes no difference to the event imo whatever currency you advertise it in.

With sterling value tumbling as it is they have to do something to retain the best field and that means upholding prize money value be that in £££ or $$$, US dollar is the most widely used and stable international currency there is so makes sense.

Humbling but self inflicted so we cant complain, needs must.

I get that it's their job but ITS THE OPEN!!!! one of the majors!!!!! If there is one tournament the players should care less about Money it's the open(and the other majors)

Footballers are paid handsomely but they don't play in world cups and Euros over money

Footballers are selected for teams, The Open they are representing themselves.

If they felt the way you and I do about The Open there would be no prize fund at all and that would extend to all the Majors,

You need prize fund to encourage those who will finish 2-124th etc.

15 years ago they were better off being paid in pounds. No one complained back then. Now it is the other way around.

Soon it will be Malaysian Ringets, or some such.

Its a nonsense. The prize pot is the prize pot, and it should be paid in pounds, our national currency. What if the top 10 are based in Europe? Then they need to convert the dollars back to Euros, or pounds.

Daft idea.
