Haven't played any open competitions and was wondering what was the best way about going about entering them on away courses?

Be good to play some new courses competitively and at reduced rates. Is the best way just to go on the individual club websites? Or is there somewhere you can find dates for Open competitions in the area?

I use golf empire, but you can also buy the wee yellow book for about a fiver. Available in most pro shops.
One complaint about course and opens though, they really need to drag themselves out of the 16th century regarding payments and booking. Still asking for a cheque and SAE for your time and stuff!! I don't think I even know anyone with a personal cheque book these days.

I agree but when someone asks for a cheque I normally just say on my booking form to call my mobile and I will provide card details for payment.

To corroborate this, I found mine stuffed in my golf bag somewhere and the only thing I have ever paid for with a cheque is membership subs and open comp fees, nothing non golf related.

lol plenty of our golf club members still have them.

Redone our locker room and asked for direct debits to be set up for fees and if not then bank transfers. Out of 96 lockers I got about 40 this way, the rest left a cheque in the box or cash behind the bar!

Worth checking directly with courses you want to play most. Some operate a ballot based on handicap whilst others are first come, first served. The popular ones fill up really fast so worth checking with the secretary when entries are going to open.

Worth getting to know some local golf societies as well as that can be a way to play some decent courses.

In either case don't expect to win anything - just enjoy the course.

If I done this it would more than likely result in my entry being filed under the irrelevant category-the bin.

This is what I mean, stuck in the dark ages. People complain about younger members not coming through the ranks, go and ask a 20 year old if they have a cheque book, I'll bet they don't even know what one looks like. I actually missed out on 2 opens I wanted to enter this year because of the hassle of entering them with the cheque/SAE nonsense.

Without wishing to sound ageist or anything but I'd guess they are all older members?

Cash rich oldies, that's why...

I haven't booked any Opens this year to date, which is very unusual for me!

I'm normally all over Beau Desert, Sherwood Forest, Moortown and a few others I enjoy as soon as they go live but this year I already have quite a few 2-3 day away trips in Kent (Littlestone, RCP, RSG), Cornwall (St Mellion), East Sussex (Cooden), Lincolnshire (Forest Pines & Gainsborough), Surrey (Hankley Common & Swinley Forest) and no doubt a couple more will slip in still yet, so even though I have the backing of HID's, I think I might need to do a bit of work in between some of those days away :smirk:
