Open Competitions

It is a bit different over here. Most clubs will have an open every week so you can float about playing different courses for not much money. They seem to use them to generate a bit of income

actual individual opens seem to be a bit hit and miss some places have them others dont and run 4BBB, and i have done a few amateur tour events which have been well run and good fun at quality courses.
Not come across any real disater stories yet.

36 holes round Gullane no.1 on saturday for £30 soup and sarnies included.

Too tough for me at Par 71 from the blue tees 6873yds....but still had a top day out.

Thats because your a hacker . Cracking value that mate, got a few lined up Alyth Open for £12 and Kirriemuir Texas Scramble we were dire last year but was good craic, maybe try and play Forfar as well which is always well run.

Same here you can play an open most weekends if you wanted. I usually play half a dozen per year when I first started it was every week. Some are not worth going back one you have played the course once;)

Plenty choice were you stay....Enjoy your away days

Hi guys,

Anybody played in many open competitions at clubs other than your own?

Any good or bad experiences to share?

Gareth
I try and play in as many as possible thoughout the year. Generally really good but played in one recently and the pair we played with had no handicap no golf shoes and no game. They scored 11 points in a betterball. It's a joy to play a different course with a chance of winning if occasionally have a good round.

Played LOADS! best way to play a course as it will be in pristine condition, from the back tees, a fraction of the normal green fee and theres a chance to win money and get a cut or 2 (36 hole comps) or go up 0.2 :smirk:

Played a few. Some are a bandits day out and others are really good. Bit of a mixed bag in terms of my own experiences. I'm sure there are a few sites about with dates in. Some do have handicap restrictions and may ballot people out if over subscribed. What I would say though is they usually provide a way of playing other courses at a cheaper rate than the standard green fee. Worth a look

What do people think of 36 hole open comps? Never played a 36 holer yet. Is it a good day out or too much of a slog??

Honestly, I'd struggle.
Dodgy knees and an even dodgier ankle make 27 my limit.
Even after that walking is painful and the ankle siezes up.......

We seem to get lots of Senior (55+) and Junior Opens around here but not many individual ones - when they do come up they're often 36 holers so I pass....

played in several over the last few years as we have some very cheap ones at Holme hall and market rasen. Honestly as they are medals they can be so brutal if they are slow and if you have a couple of bad holes. Played in one a couple of years ago and the wind was really up and it was a warm wind. There was several guys who are cat 1 just N/R due to slow play and the day turned into a farce.

Personally I dont mind it as I have played 36 for the last 3 Sundays and I have 36 this Sunday the following Sunday 18 then the next two Sundays 36. My other half thinks I am mad!

Will let you know at the end of July hopefully  Junior scratch cup at my place and hopefully I will get in.

Yes play a few each year good way to experience other courses for little money.
Playing 2 this weekend Royal st Davids £28 texas scramble on friday and Porthmadog on Saturday £25 also texas scramble making a little weekend road trip with the lads. But my favourite open is Sillouth they have 3 each year May/July/ August but you need to be quick to get in. :smirk:

Got my name down for the Ross scratch cup (Ross on wye). 36 hole medal, no chance of winning against all the county players but, £16 for 36 holes is a bargain!

eyeing up the war memorial at burnham & berrow as that's 36 hole then top 32 qualify for knockout....also includes a curtosy round....£35 - absolute steel! Just I feel that if fully subscribed then the lowest get in and I wouldn't be surprised if the highest to get in is 1!

best team open day out I have been to is Royal Porthcawl - around £50 each with 2 course meal.

On the flip side, I played individual open medal at Pennard last year and although I'm glad I've played the course and would like to play it again, after it took 1hr 40 to play 3 holes and one of the guys was the angriest golfer I've ever played with, I lost total interest.
