Ive been looking into entering a few open competitions to try and bolster my schedule as its pretty sparse apart from my club comps on saturdays. Has anybody got an good sites to look on or even recommended comps they know about etc? Also do these count towards getting my handicap down? Also has anybody entered these sort of things on their own as well because i will be riding solo as my usual partner is under the thumb big style! :)

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Have a look at

golfempire.co.uk
singlefiguregolfer.co.uk

On golfempire you can drill down to county level and also select the type of competition you are after ie. scratch, individual, pairs, mixed etc

Have a look at golf empire as seen in the mag.
Also in the north west a decent amateur tour atourgolf regular comps and friendly bunch went on my own last year don't worry about going on you'd own you'll be fine. Other than that gtour or north golf tour organise events you'll fine all these on golf empire via links. Not forgetting forum meets at formby and hillside planned for this year.

Yup, get on the Formby hall meet. The main meet is early on, on the Friday or 3 of us are playing at about 4.00, if you dont want to take a day of work.

Golf empire, as mentioned. The other one is the northern matchplay/volvo/race to dubai etc, they have pairs options and single golfer options. It is matchplay on a home or away basis.

I fancy the Hillside one too but struggling to get clearance at work for that one at the moment :(

Cheers for the replies about other websites too

Why?
Shouldn't it be the same for all?
Because THE MAN has decreed, after studying copious returns from opens, that there is an inherent bias towards home players, so henceforth (well actually, it's from a couple years past) there shall be both a home and away CSS.

The OP was handicap 20, so wouldn't apply.

The website name is a bit misleading as there are a few events on it that cater for the higher handicapper.

Also regarding the CSS, some comps have seperate ones for home and away players but the majority of them only have one overall CSS.

If there are more than 20 "home" players and 20 "visiting" players in an Open, then 2 separate CSSs must be calculated. If the CSS for "home" players turns out to be higher than the "visitors" CSS then it reverts to a single CSS.

That may well be the rules but in practice you seldom get 20 players playing in their own club's open (well, scratch opens anyway) as they don't want to pay out £30+ to play their home course.
