What opens do you enter every year and why ?

We have played Brocton Hall for the last 4 years and LLanymynech for the last 3.

In recent years we have done Ludlow and Sandwell - just wondered what your favourite courses are to play during "open" season.

Are there any i should be playing in around here ?

We are also looking at playing Bridgnorth and Kington this year.

We play at Forfar every year its a cracking wee course and always has a full turnout, this year for the first time i'm playing The St Andrews Club's one on the Jubilee course looking forward to it as its a cracking course.
Hoping to play Royal Aberdeen's one as its tough as hell so im told and a course thats been on my list for a while.

Never played one.
A combination of time and money (or lack of).

I was tempted to play in one at the Oxfordshire years ago but didn't.

The thing about them mate as its a good way to get cheap golf and play of the back begs, the St Andrews one is £23 with a 2 course meal the green fee is normally £65 the Forfar one is £12 you cant get better than that.

Good value for sure. they don't seem to be advertised round here much. Can't say I've heard of any or seen any notices. BUt then round here you have belong to one of the "proper" clubs to go in fo that sort of thing...

One of the all time great Opens is the Mourne Open Week. This is an Open week held by the "town" club who play at Royal County Down (aka Newcastle). It is held in July, and you get a tee time and a chance to win a prize on the finest golf course in Ireland, and a considerable discount on the normal green fee. The course is usually in wonderful condition too. This is worth a trip.

27 Opens @ say£20 apiece.
Over £500.
YOu're obviously not paying enough for your memberships :D

It's all I can do to justify that for my membership without throwing a few Opens in as well. With the GM100 and the Blackmoor meet, that's most of my "awayday" budget gone already.

Loads round here Imurg - most clubs have em, you just need to look...check the county golf union websites, golf empire and the egu golf central is good too....
I'm sure there are Sammeee

1st one I found - Burnham Beeches Gents Open £45.
The case for the prosecution rests...... :p

Imurg

depends how far you want to travel and what you want to pay, planning on trying to play 1 a month this summer, seems plenty to choose from. am mainly using golf empire to find out what on and when (there again im new to this area and most of the localish tracks are new to me)

Thing is, a lot of the opens down our way are cat 1 only. The one at my course is, and also not cheap (well, as cheap as the Scottish ones seem to be).

Most of the ones I do are £30 to £50 (which compared to the Scottish ones is expensive) for 36 holes with breakfast, lunch and dinner mostly and good prizes...white tees, fast greens...can't really see how it can be seen as expensive..

Some are for Cat 1 but there are quite few for under 12, under 18 handicaps too....

I'd be up for that. Do you know when their open week is?

I will be playing in several Opens this year.

It is the best way to play a course as you get to play off the back pegs not herded onto the yellows and the course is usually in it's pristine best condition.

I have lined up so far Montrose and Hirsel and I am looking into several others, would love to go back to Royal Aberdeen though I am playing there in April anyway.North Berwick have a good one which is 36,18 at the Glen and 18 at the West for £30!!

For any of the low guys keep your eyes peeled for a fantastic Open that I am organising for the 10th September at Goswick.....36 holer Scratch Open for £30 with a prize fund of £1300,winner takes home £500 and the Rodger Bowl. ;)

We are hoping to attract some of the best choppers in Northern England and Scotland to this inaugural event and I will post when details are finalised.

Nothing like that fig. Spey Valley is the most expensive out of this lot and some are only £10 0r £12. Prob about half that amount. :D

I think it is usually the week of the 12th of July.

Open scene seems to be a bit different here in Ireland a lot of courses run weekly opens usually 15-20 euros then a lot of courses will have there open weeks, the scratch cups are very popular but here you could play almost any format any day of the week for the summer in open comps and it is almost all done thru the GUI web site. Someone mentioned the mourne challenge earlier on but check out the Atlantic Challenge on in July €125 for 3 fab links courses u may never have heard about.

Trying to find an event for the society to enter a team into (company pays but there is a limit); we played Woburn last year. There aren't many listed at present, just The Grove at £125 each and a couple of Pro-Ams.
