Hall of Famer
Played in a club match (4 ball better ball) against Sand Martins who are just down the road in Wokingham. My partner was off 17 (getting 2 shots) and the opposition were off 18 and getting 4 each.
I hit the ball so much better than yesterday and started par par birdie. Dropped a shot on 4 (poor drive) and 6 (missed the par 3's green) and holed a monster 20 footer for par on 7. Dropped a shot on 9 to go out in +2 gross and yet we were only one up.
Chucked in a bogey at 11 and a double at 12 but I hit two great shots at 14 playing all of its 430 yards into the wind to hit the green and make par which put us 3 up and 4 to play. I found a bunker on 15 and my partner had a mare so we lost that and as I was giving both opponents a shot on 16 and they were just short in 2 (net 1) I played a high risk shot I would never have taken on in a medal and inevitably lost the ball. My partner got a 5 but they won it with a net 4.
We all hit wild drives down 17 and were all hitting out of deep rough but I found the green with mine and thought it was start the car time until one of them drained a 10 yard downhill putt that was going like a train. Smacked the back of the cup leapt up and dropped.
Nerves came into play at 18. I took a 3 wood because a) it was downwind and there is a ditch that would have been in play and b) I thought if I hit a bad shot right it won't reach the OB. My partner crashed his OB and I hit my 3 wood. Big pushed fade/slice hack looking odds on OB. Hit a provisional (with driver) and went the same way. One of their guys went OB so looked like a half. Found my original (and provisional) and hit the green for 4 (packed patio) and rolled a 20 yarder downhill to 2 foot and then holed out to win. For the 17 holes I completed I was only +8 gross
Happy days and the best I've putted for ages. I holed everything from 6 foot and in and my ball striking was so much better than yesterday. I'm one very happy and very sunburnt camper
