Evening all

I have been looking for courses to join as a member and in my search for this I've decided that I 1.enjoy playing a different course every week and 2.being busy at work won't allow me to get the most out of my membership. So my idea is to get a Official Hcp so that I can play in opens at different courses, there by getting to play new courses all the time plus play in comps which is the main reason for getting a membership as I enjoy competitions.

So my question is can anyone recommend anywhere online to get an official Hcp that I can use and keep updated easily?

thanks in advance

Simple answer - you cannot have an official handicap unless you are a member of a club affiliated to a National Union.

Quick answer is unfortunately a no. If it were possible then there would be very few members at most clubs.

Edit: must remember not to walk away before finishing posting a reply ;)

Oh that ruins that plan then. What are the ones that offer them online then? Like this one https://secure.golfclubgb.co.uk

Basically it's an official unoffical handicap. You can play all over the place and effectively all games count towards your handicap. You can use it to provide proof of handicap to play some courses but shouldn't be able to enter official union comps etc. Can't imagine maybe clubs allowing you to play for prizes with it either.

There are plenty such online outfits and you will not find the word "official" in their blurb. They are only online score tracking services. There is no monitoring of what goes into their systems - you could, if you wanted, submit scores which would give you a scratch handicap if that's what you wanted. You could also submit scores to give you a 28 handicap and you could keep it at 28 forever if you wanted to.

The option is to find the cheapest muni course and get a handicap there, even if you barely set foot in the place again

This is from the FAQs on its website:

7: Can I play in Competitions with the Handicap Certificate
Yes, you can play in most Open Competitions with the exception of any EGU competitions as we are not affiliated to the EGU

Do any forummers know of any Opens that don't require a CONGU handicap?

Depending on what area you are in, there may be Clubs that allow you to 'belong' and acquire a handicaop without having to pay full fees. Rather more flexible than fully joining a Club and the way more Clubs will go imo.

There are various names for these sorts of subscription, but 'Lifestyle' is a common enough one. You can pay a certain amount up front and get 'points' which are deducted for each round you play - different points for different times. There are also Clubs that have a small sub and discount off Green Fees. Both can provide Congu handicaps!

Where are you based chris?
The good folk on here might be able to suggest a reasonably priced club option

Some will let you play but no chance of taking any goodies away with you.

G Tour have been playing open competitions for a number of years at De Vere venues and a lot of the players had these online handicap certificates. A couple of us played in it for two years and got to play courses such as Slaley Hall, Mottram Hall, Oulton Hall, Herons Reach and Wychwood Park. You scored points every time you played and the top 32 (I think) made it to the semi finals that were played at somewhere like Belton Woods over two days. The top ten (ish) qualifiers then got to play the final at Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus so it was a decent competition.

If I had paid an entry fee - and I wouldn't if I knew in advance what you say - for an Open competition, I would not be very happy if some of the other competitors had effectively decided on their own handicaps with no control or monitoring whatsoever.

I've just joined my local club Hawarden in North Wales, and have been told that I must hand in 3 cards signed with another member who has been a member for 6 months minimum.

Different clubs will have different take on who can and can't mark a handicap card but three cards is the norm. Get the sorted get your mark and crack on beating it

yeah I'm still not breaking 100 as an average this month. Have actually played 9 times this month, and majority of it was as a member, which I don't start paying until August 1st. :) Getting my money's worth.

Today another single golfer joined me on the 2nd tee and asked if he could come around for the front 9. He was off 15, and gave me some good tips, explained some rules and told me about Sunday Corner. Which is a thing they do where you play as a group of 4 against other groups, all mixed handicaps. Said it would be good for me to a) get a handicap, b) meet other members.

Just need to fix this damn slice. Ha ha.
