So after 8 years faithful service my old Yamaha RXV AV amp decided enough was enough and failed.
I had a look around and decided, after reading many, many reviews to go for Onkyo.
Managed to pick up a NR414 for a reasonable price and all I can say is Wow!
The Digital DTS reproduction is amazing as is the 3D ARC return audio and for its price its jam packed with features like zone 2 audio.

Anyone else used Onkyo kit before and been as impressed?

I have used on old Onkyo before and wasn't blown away as I had terrestrial and didn't have a decent set of speakers and cable at the time. Given the advances in TV, 3D, Blu-ray, SkytV etc I'm sure things have come a very long way. The Onkyo's get very impressive write ups and when I was looking for an amp, 2nd hand models were still commanding silly money.

I've got a Sony TV and Blu-ray player so went with a Sony AV reciever with a wharfedale diamond 5.1 spreaker setup which shakes the room when watch an action scene or rock music so I'm happy, unlike my neighbours. Can't wait for the day I decide its time for some floorstanders

600W total output across the 6 channels which is more than loud enough. Running through a full Gale Audio 5.1 system the sound clarity is just awesome. Thankfully silly money didn't come in to it.

im not into techy high end stuff, went to a shop in Glasgow into their sound room. I put on one of my cds and was amazed at the sound and quality.
if I was looking at anything else it would defo be Onkyo

try some proper gear like ARCAM with some decent speakers and prepare to be amazed

Used to have an Arcam pre and power amp set up running through Bowers & Wilkes 602 and 603 speakers. Wouldnt say it was all that much better due to the environment. If they were being used in a properly purpose built accoustics lounge then I might see the point.

I have an Onkyo Tx-SR506 (black version) and run it with yamaha speakers/sub in a 5.1 setup. Sky runs via the fibre optic port and blueray is HDMI, I am kind of used to it now but for the first few months I was really impressed with the surround channels, especially when watching movies like Saving Private Ryan, the explosions going off around you really do make you jump and my two dogs started barking when a door got knocked on some childrens tv show haha.
The amount of ports on the back along with the autosetup mic etc make it a very easy to use system, allegedly mine is entry level but it really beats the pants of anything I have owned before.

damn you lot.... I have been putting off an av receiver for ages and now you have me looking again. Onkyo are very good, some decent deals at the likes of richer sounds aswell.

off to peruse the web......

Having used the Yamaha for so long with the optical audio I noticed a huge difference immediately with the HDMI ARC. The NR414 is probably on a par level wise with the Yamaha (not sure how it stacks against the SR series) but doesnt look or sound it.
People that will talk about Arcam kit are missing my point, FOR THE PRICE this is a bloody good receiver.

Crawford, that actually made me laugh.

I've got a Onkyo HTX-22HDX thats an amp with a built in sub, only got it set up for 2.1 at the minute but going to get round to buying the extra speakers for full surround.

It's perfect if you have limited space and after something a little cheaper.

Home Cinema is a nightmare and sucks you in - you buy stuff that you never know you needed and hen the Mrs plays help with all the cabling. I mentioned Arcam because a lot of Home cinema receivers are too bright for music, Arcam aren't but a hasten to add the new stuff costs a fortune I bought an AVR 350 for £450 and its actually gone up in value. If you are buying cheaper receivers you would better off spending more on speakers

My Father-in-law swears by Onkyo stuff, won't buy anything else. Having heard the quality though I have to say it is very impressive and if I was in the market for some AV kit then I'd definitely be looking at Onkyo.
