Apologies if this is a daft question ..

One of the first things I was told when I started last year was that you have the same swing for driving as you do for your irons.

For the past couple of months I have been hitting my irons well, but my driving has been awful.

I had a lesson the other day to try to sort out my driving. The pro suggested a couple of changes in set up and swing and it worked wonders. Played a round afterwards and my driving was miles better. However, my irons were a lot worse than usual!

I'm not sure if this is because I was making the same swing change when hitting my irons or not.

So, do you have one swing for both, or slightly different swings for driving and irons?

I definitely have two. I struggle with my driver so it is a lot more of a conscious swing as opposed to my iron swing which is more natural. It also depends what shape I am trying to put on the ball.

I'd say: different setup but very similar basic movement. But I know the phenomenon you are talking about. I have days when I hit my woods and driver pretty well and struggle witht he irons and vice versa. That's probably why I like my hybrid so much. It seems to be working on both kind of days :)

Same swing for both for me, just a little bit different set up.

If you have 2 swings, how can you ever bed anything in to make it natural?

This is the way to go. With a driver you want to hit up on the ball to get the best results, where as irons need more of a descending blow. Tweaking your set-up (e.g. more shoulder tilt and ball off the left toe with a driver, and more parallel shoulders and a ball nearer the middle with a short iron) should help this without you having to get overly technical.

Def the same swing but the ball position, body and takeaway are different. The latter is mostly due to the former being different. If I kept them the same then it would be a different swing.

Genuinely interested, at what point does the takeaway end and back-swing begin?

No idea, I just know I have a slight adjustment to ensure I hit up on the ball. If not I would be getting into a place where I have to correct myself somehow.

Like most I know what I want to do, it's just doing it that is the hard bit!

OK....enlighten me. Those that reckon they have 2 swings, what is the difference between them?

I think iv got a different swing for every shot I hit!
My swing is like a bit of a schizophrenic these days and I never know which ones going to turn up either.
I like to think I only have one swing though with very slight differences though,, ball positions etc to compensate for different club lengths and so forth.
Having 2 swings is double the work

Sounds a wee bit like you're fishing for something. Its not that I reckon I have two, I know I have two but I'll concede I suppose that conjecturally you might think that I only have one but existentially its two

Biggest difference is the club head swing path funnily enough (much of which is linked to the ball being central in my stance for all full shots & the resulting 'angle of attack') I also break the wrists much sooner with an iron

Do you feel enlightened ;)

edit:sorry, perhaps fishing is too strong and its just you're very dubious

I am dubious. Moving ball position forward or back does not constitute a 'different' swing. God help anyone who does have 2 swings, this game is difficult enough to master with one.

And dare I say it, I bet the ones that do try to swing differently are higher handicappers. It isn't something I've ever seen a good player do and maybe that is the clue ;)

I don't doubt its related to the poorer golfer, that's not the topic of the thread though, although if you discount swing path and simplify a 'swing' to a backward motion of the club followed by a forward motion then yes we all have one swing
