On your own...

Yes - if it's a practice round where I want to try different shots/options then much better on my own. Don't have to worry about holding up playing partners and can chat away to myself to my heart's content.

Yeah i don't mind playing on my own, like amanda, can try a few different things. if your shot doesn't go where you want it can just drop another. I normally chuck some headphones on whilst i go around (obviously not on a busy day)

If it's a praccer for a competitive round I'd rather play with someone I know who is also playing that comp. just so that I can talk about certain shots or how best to play a hole with them.

Play a lot of rounds my self. As others have said best way to practice certain shots, especially around the greens, I like to get a few balls down and try different lies and types of shots.

Exactly. If its quiet I use a couple of balls and try different tactics.

Does anyone have a particular thing they work on?

I.e. 120 approach shots etc?

How many practice long irons/5 woods from the fairway or rough?

I don't like it when the course is busy, but when it's quiet I enjoy playing alone.

Sometimes I'll play 2 balls, but most often it's just re-take shots that didn't go well and hit a few chips and putts around each green.

I'm quite happy with my own company, and find it very relaxing just pottering about without worrying about anything else.

Chris wood mentioned that golfers wearing headphones is the thing that annoys him most about amateur golfers. I agree with him, strike is key, you can't hear the strike with them in

yup - do it all the time - and have done since I took up the game 45yrs ago. Not really interested in practicing on a range or practice ground. That's why my h/cap is what it is (cross-posting from the other thread on that topic)

I've often done it, especially if I'm working on something, especially my short game when I can play a couple of balls, course traffic allowing. Nothing better than first thing in the morning as the first on the course or in the late summer sun

and for me that is one of the blessings of being a member of a golf club

All the time, do to my work when I'm off i play during the day of the week, pretty quiet so can practice a fair bit. Since I joined this year I've been sussing the course out, will be putting in 3 cards in spring so I can play some comps,

i play at lot on my own and will repeat poor shots and practise different things but sometimes I do think that I rush round and so will often try and join up with someone if there is anyone around.

A few years again I was working on a couple of projects that involved a day of back-to-back telephone conferences across the globe, i.e. Malaysia, India, Europe, London, Texas and Seattle. Come the end of the day, my brain was cabbage. So going out on the course at the end of the day by myself was so peaceful and relaxing it was truly therapeutic.

I still like going out by myself from time to time and should do it more often as it's a good way to try different things as already mentioned.

Apparantly Luke Donald used to wear headphones on the course
He had sounds of the crowd applauding so he wouldn't be distracted when it came to the big tournaments

Not sure if this is fact or urban myth, but its an interesting story
