So it's competition day. You're on the first tee. It's a shot fraught with danger where a lost ball or an irretrievable OOB is a very real possibility. What do you tee up?

A brand new Pro V1 just out of the box or similar, or do you ease yourself in with something "nearly new" until you get properly into your rhythm.

Me? I'm option 2 all day long.;)

It's only a ball - tee it up and smash it up the middle

I don't play comps, but if I did I'd just play what ever ball I pulled out of my bag,Ad333,E6....
It really wouldn't make any difference at my level.
Ideally I'd hit my 5w.

It's just a ball and if you're worrying about losing it, you're most likely going to lose it. You need to be more positive.

This!

Started reading Bob Rotella's "Golf is not a game of perfect", such simple advice that we often overlook. Be positive, visualise the shot you're going to play (where it's flying, where it's ending up, and not where you don't want to go) then trust yourself and your swing to play it. Get that shiny new ball out and imagine smashing it down the middle, think about the OOB and I know where you'll be playing your next from.....a repeat of the 1st most likely ;)

Option 2.

There is a great story about sporting mindset from Richie Benaud. He was playing golf with a bloke when they had a tee shot over a ravine. The bloke walked to his bag and picked out an old ball. Benaud told him to stop, walked to the mans bag and pulled out a new ball. We walked to the tee and swapped them over. "If you think you will fail then you will" I can't remember if the bloke made the shot or not but it is all about mindset.

If I am playing well then I will not swap to a poorer ball for a difficult shot but I will start the round with an average ball and upscale if the round is going well.

That makes no sense at all for so many reasons. Balls will get lost, if you don't want or can't afford to lose good balls don't buy them because you will lose or damage them. It doesn't matter how well you are or aren't playing at some point you will hit a bad shot and lose a ball.

It actually amazes me that so many people worry about losing golf balls, doing so is part of the game and nothing you can do will prevent it from happening
