All the plans were made to retire very shortly. Pensions aligned, drawdowns agreed. House hunting and viewing trips lined up. Get some sun into those aching arthritic bones..."Hasta la vista baby!"

Cue a phone call from my boss. He's been dropping hints, and skirting round my retirement for a couple of months, and he knows coming direct at me doesn't work - read awkward Yorkshireman. BOOOOooooommm!!

"How do you fancy European Operations Manager for.... full relocation package.... bonuses... shares.... less travelling than I've got now.... less staff.... what do you think?"

Oh flip flops! Spoke to the Treasurer, who has been the driver for the place in the sun, and she says, "go for it, that'll be interesting AND we get to move abroad at their expense..." Double flip flops with a half pike and tuck.

Need to see the detail, which I guess means I'm tempted, but oh my head hurts!

Do it

What have you got to lose?

And what country do you think you will be based in?

"Never had a Roman spit on me..." is the next line.

Northern Germany, with the odd trip to Holland, Norway and... sunny Scotland.

The "got to lose" is the retirement time, and time can never be relived.

Retire now if you can afford it, retirement is great. You only live once.
^^This mate^^, so much more to life, if everything is in place for home in the sun. it's time you'll never get back.
Good Luck though on whatever you decide, definitely not an easy decision for you.

Is hardly sunny and warm, and during the winter month the chances are they'll get more snow and proper winter weather than we'll get here in the UK. I think as I mentioned to you Bri, wor lasses brother made the jump from Jersey to SE Spain and bar a little home sickness they love it.

You're not wrong Dave. Head office is on the Baltic coast. Beautiful area, especially in the summer... but there's nowt worse than the wind around your Baltics!!

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

Germany is a great country to live and work in imvho. I loved it over there.

I reckon I'd be taking the retirement package if it was on offer (and most importantly suitable for you and what you want to do in your retirement).

A nice problem to have nonetheless.

I'd normally say retire, sod work, if you can afford to do it.

However, I believe a third of people who go to live abroad or retire overseas end up returning to these shores. It may be worth using work for 2-3 years to see if it does actually work for you.

The missus missing the bingo lasses and you the craic in the pub/golf club for sun,sea and ........strangers. It may not be for you.

At least the "acid test" is carried out on works tab, instead of your own.

Just a thought.

Must find the right balance for what you want in life mate

Germany is a great place to live and whilst it can be cold during winter months the rest of the months the weather is great and it's so easy to get around the continent

Just make sure it's right for both you and her indoors mate

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter; never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

As Pink Floyd put it! Personally I'd stick to the original plan as I wouldn't really want to go to Germany for the sake of a few extra years in the rat race

The lengths you'll go to in order not to play golf with me!

I retired a year ago and started a part time job last week - nuff said!

You do realise that Germany is full of Germans don't you??? If you can afford to then retire now I'd say, you've worked all your life so now is the time to sit back and chill
