Anyone got thoughts on the King Cobra F/Speed driver, and Wilson Deep Red 3/5 woods? Got the chance to purchase both from a colleague's husband. I'm a beginner and don't want to be shelling out hundreds on equipment really.
I don't think I'll take the 5 wood as it covers a similar loft area to my hybrid, but the 3 wood and the driver are definite possibilities.

I've got Deep Red II irons and 5 wood. The irons I can vouch for as being as good as the Ping G range which is the go to for game improvement clubs. I can't say I've hit any other 5 woods but I'm happy with mine so I doubt the 3 wood is going to be terrible.

Not a direct review but a general thumbs up to the Wilson Deep Red line.

I love my gadgets and new stuff so I'm probably the last one who shoukd comment on Old Golf clubs, but last week played in a 4 Ball with a lad off 1, his irons and woods are over 10 years old and when asked why? He simply stated that until he finds another set that he feels as comfortable with, he has no intention of changing them. Certainly made me think.

Cobra F speed was in my bag for so many years. Why? Because it was so forgiving! Really bad mis***** still went 200yards (225 on a reasonable strike) and kept me in the hole many a time. It was so well suited to the stock Aldila shaft that even gentle wafts at the ball could produce surprising results.
Only draw back for me was the high flight - BIIIG distance killer in any sort of head-wind.
It's now been displaced by the Love of my Life - Mizuno JPX850 (courtesy of GM and MikeH:whoo:).

That's really useful to hear LIG. Thanks. High flight might be an issue, but I can work around that for the price for now.

I've a set of Deep Red Irons and hybrids at the inlaws in Hungary which I use when we visit - they were my starter set and are still more than useable - they've been excellent clubs for me

Don't be too hasty on rejecting the 5 wood would be my advice.

For many begineers (and competent players with lower swing speeds, I'm off 12 and it applies to me), a 3 wood is a tricky beast especially off the fairway. Without enough swing speed it can be difficult to get enough height to deliver distance. A 5 wood which gives a higher launch may well get at least as much distance but with a more pleasing flight. It often has a shorter shaft which makes it easier to hit, again delivering better distance/flight.

It also probably won't deliver the same results as a similarly lofted hybrid. My 5w flies both higher and longer than the 'same' hybrid. This is usually due to different clubhead characteristics and a slightly longer shaft.

Why not 'borrow' the 5w and take it to the range with the other two? That way you can see how your swing works with them and choose the clubs that give you the flight and gapping that suit.

Oh, and don't pay too much. I would say that they have a pretty negligable second hand value, being both old and not a super popular brand. Not that they aren't decent (they are), but just not worth an awful lot.
