Right, just for fun here is the scenario ; they have managed to resurrect old Tom and shaved a few years off of him and he and his wife ( similar age) walk into your pro shop and say something like " I havn't played for a while and these clubs I've got I feel they are a little bit dated now and my wife and I would like a complete outfit ( clubs, bag, balls etc) but I really don't know what to choose , can you help me?" . By the way I heard he was fairly good at playing so he was probably a mid to low handicapper .

Now I am not that knowledgeable about the various types and styles of clubs ( only the ones I own ) to be able to give sound advice , but you on the other hand ..........:D

well he'd probably go for the cheapest Fazers or Dunlop.....

Young Tom Morris died on Christmas day 1875 aged 24, just months after his wife died in childbirth.

Old Tom died in 1908, His wife Nancy in 1876, she suffered ill health most of her later life and rarely ventured out

I can recommend a book called Tommy's Honour by Kevin Cook which tells their story

Returning to the OP, I wonder how much a set of Old Toms clubs or original balls would be worth nowadays

Id like to see a match between Young Tom Vs Tiger using the gear available to Tom, and then a rematch using modern gear
that would be interesting

Hi Tom,Madam[his wife] I haven't seen you in here for a while.
No ive been practicing for the "open" going for my 4th in a row.
What can I do for you?
We are looking for an outfit for the open for both of us,and some new golf gear.
Well we have these new Jetspeed clubs from Taylormade.
What another one say Tom,they only had the sldr out last month, crazy.
No im looking for something a bit more forgiving.
How about the Ping G25s.
Ping says Tom ive never heard of them.
Yes Lee Westwood uses Ping.
Who says Tom?is he a threat in a major?
No says I he cant putt to save his life.
What about balls say Tom,im still using these Gutty things.
We have Titliest prov1s only £10 for 3.
Are you kidding me I could buy a house for that, daylight robbery.
Come on darling were out of here, lets go to AG at least they price match, and have
more choice, maybe we can get you some srixon lady balls.

Could go something like this.

Pro suggests that he watches Old Tom hit a few balls. He and Tom, dressed in full tweeds and hobnailed boots, clubs under his arm, walk to the practice ground. Tom throws down some gutty balls, pulls out his favourite brassie and smashes 6 in a row 220 yards about 20 feet off the ground dead straight.

They then walk to the short game area. Tom takes his niblick (this has a face about 1/8 of an inch thick with no flange or bounce) and from 30 yards chips 6 balls that roll out stone dead.

Now over to the putting green. With his trusty bladed putter Tom holes 6 in a row from 10 feet.

They walk back to the shop. Pro says "OK see what you think of this" and hands him a Mars bar.
