After numerous attempts the Old Course ballot has finally come through for me - I have a time tomorrow. Neither me or my dad has played it, so really cant wait to step onto that hallowed turf with the old boy.

Clubs are cleaned, camera is charged and the alarm is set for 4am. May the golfing gods be good to us and let the sun shine if only for a few holes!

nice one, im up there in august so might be after a ferw tips :D dont think you,ll need to set your alarm, enjoy it

Enjoy mate

Played it in May and its a fantastic experience. Take plenty photos coz it will all be over too soon.

First tee is pretty nerve wracking then you can relax and enjoy it before the nerves pick up again on the 17th tee, with that drive over the sheds and then the approach hoping to avoid Road Hole Bunker(with part of you secretly wanting to go in it) before the walk up 18 which in itself is worth the green fee.

You will love and want to play it again as soon as you are finished :D

I played it last month. It is an unforgettable experience.

2 things - take a caddy. It will save you about 10 shots. Secondly, since I see that you play off 3, don't be afraid to ask to play off the whites.

Going up next month. Going to watch my eldest son do his stand up act at the Fringe, then next day over to St Andrews. Staying one night in the Old Course Hotel and a round on the Duke's the following day. We're in the ballot for the Old Course on the first day, if we are not successful, we play the New Course in it's stead.

This sums it up perfectly.
They give you a course guide at the starters hut and we marked on it where each shot finished.
It helps you remember things later.

Just got home after a truly brilliant day. Wind beaten and knackered but stayed dry and the golf wasnt too shabby, -1 for the front nine and +8 back for a 79 - guess which way the wind was blowing?

Highlights are undoubtedly the 1st tee, wanting to hit a shot worthy of your surroundings and not do a Baker-Finch! 3wood drilled down the middle, thankyou very much.

Also the drive at 17 over the sheds, woossed out a bit and went over the O in COURSE instead of HOTEL, suffered for it with the 2nd shot, cue double bogey.

And the walk up the last fairway, crack a good drive and you stride out feeling 10ft tall, even if you do go on to fly the green with your approach almost putting the bugger OB and frightening some tourists! (Tip for the day - apparently the buildings shelter you from the wind, take a club less.)
