A friend is heading to St Andrews next week and has asked how likely getting on to the Old through the ballot is next week. I assume that it should be no bother at this time of year...anyone have a different opinion?

No real idea of demand - and on what day.
But if they don't get in on the specific day, they can always simply queue up by the Starter's hut. That's the way I've always done it and haven't failed to get on (played it 5 times).
New and Jubilee are really good courses too. Not played the Church course, but heard good things about it (though some think the greens can be silly).

Doh! Yes!Do you mean the Castle Course???
Do you mean the Castle course Foxie ? Playing it later in the month so will let you know what I think.
I've got the Old Course on my golf bucket list, but I've always been put off by this ballot method.
Also how strict are they on having a club handicap?
I would want to play with my Father-in-law a one time 5 handicapper, but who hasn't been a member of a club or have a handicap in the last 20 years. So not sure whether he would be able to get on. Any ideas?

You will have to produce a handicap certificate to play the Old Course.
However, as long as the name on the certificate matches the name in the ballot, you're ok.
Thay don't ask for proof of ID so a "borrowed" certificate would do fine.
I like your thinking. This may be the solution.
I don't recollect being asked to prove h/c, it's a nerve racking opening tee shot with the inevitably gallery so most probably look like 28 handicappers on the tee
I know a few pros who will give a handicap certificate to get you on a course, maybe ask your pro.
Im sure this will get a bit of backlash
