Afternoon guys and I'm so glad I found this forum. So here it is I've played golf on and off for many years, but struggled to enjoy it. Only because I end up making a 4 with my father in law and my 2 brother in laws. And the reason it isn't fun well they play off 0,3,8..... hence me smacking it into a tree or 100 yards short of them.

But now it has changed. I have played a couple of rounds with 3 dad's from my little girls dance group and we are all as bad as each other but it's fun.. We have set ourselves 10 rounds a year and 3 times a month up the range if we are allowed.

Now to my point, we all borrowed clubs from relatives and looking to buy our own. I feel I could walk into any American golf place and probably get talked into buying the new nike ones (which I really want but know I wouldn't do them justice). Are any other the clubs in say a sports direct nz9 or a direct golf site worth buying? I am using my brother tailor made r11s at the moment. I can smash the life out of the ball with the driver but then the game goes to pot with the irons.

I've read so many reviews and got figures in mind I want to spend but I'm not sure.

Hope you can advise, I think I may just go mad :-)

Dave

Welcome to the forum....and golf. Now kiss goodbye to your wallet and sanity:rofl:

American golf is fine, dont buy anything new though as they have second hand sets. A local Pro will also have second hand sets (they depreciate as fast as cars) at decent prices.

You could always go to AG and try what suits your eye and swing then buy second hand via ebay or the choices I mentioned.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd advise something aimed at a higher handicapper, so a game improvement iron set. I personally use Nike Covert 2.0's, which are the irons before the latest ones. I picked them up just before Christmas for £300, and they're incredibly forgiving, and long. Rick Shiels, a popular Youtube teaching professional said when reviewing them that if he was going to be going on tour next week, he'd use Nike Covert 2.0's. Other than the Nikes, I'd recommend giving the Ping G range a go, either the G25 or G30; the Mizuno JPX EZ's; TaylorMade RSi 1's and the Callaway X2 Hot's or Big Berthas. Your best bet though would be going down to a golf store with a driving range, picking out a load of Game Improvement irons, and seeing which ones you hit best. Good luck!

My wallet and sanity went when I got married and had a child. I'm trying to get it back.

I will speak to both. Ag have this fitting thing that sounds good but I know I will get tempted to this shiny new club and this sparkly new driver and 1k later I'm trying sneak it in the house

Don't have a fitting at AG. If you're going to get a fitting, get one from a proper teaching pro. You'd be better off just hitting a load of different irons and seeing which ones you like best.

Aim for some game improvement irons. You can pick up some great deals on clubhousegolf.co.uk on last seasons clubs, which most larger AGs will still have in stock and you can try out.

Ping G25s, Taylormade Rocketbladez, or Callaway X2 Hot are all great GI Irons.

I picked up the 913 range from Titleist for my woods and drivers. Cleveland wedges are always on offer, and a Cleveland putter.

As others have said, try as many out, and either buy online or get AG to do a price match. I'd suggest at your level there is no point getting fitted until you are really playing consistently, have gotten proper lessons, and it's worthwhile. Until then you will probably be swinging differently every week so a fitting won't be too beneficial!

Finally... welcome!!!

Cool thank you very much guys narrowing clubs down will make it easier now. Oh my swing is quite unique. It's a cross between Louis Spence dancing and mike Tyson throwing a punch. Legs everywhere but with a lot of power :-)

You will fit in well here dave! Welcome!

One other piece of advice before you shell out big bucks on new shiny bats. Spending less on the clubs, and more on a set of lessons with a good pro would be a far better investment!

Agreed!

If you can afford both, get some decent clubs (but not the latest) that will last you, and invest in lessons!

Now I could do a few lessons.. but if I had the chance to get out the house for a few hours I will play a round. Finding that extra hour during the evening is not always an option. 30yrs time maybe when I retire. Actually 12 years when the little one goes to uni or moves out.

Welcome along. I think you'll fit in just fine. I'd advocate some lessons and then it depends on the budget as to how far you push the equipment boat out. No harm trying as many as you can. That's half the fun

Hi guys just a bit of an update. I popped to American golf tried every club they suggested and bought something completely different from a online store. I wasnt going to get over charged and I think they thought, newbie let's take his cash.

Well I settled for the wilson d100 irons, which are amazing I can now hit the ball straight... I bought the cobra amp cell driver and 5 Wood. Oh and they needed to be orange as the grey version looked boring. And another club the has taken my game to a level that I didn't think it would... oh and I may of bought the GAMEGOLF as I needed a gadget :-)

Had a lesson also and my louis Spence legs are under control. :-)

Good choice buddy I was gonna suggest "Wilson Fatshafts" as that's what I started off with last year, the only thing I will say is I found them to be quite hard on my right elbow !

I'm now running "Tour Edge Exotics XCG3's" which are a whole lot less punishing on the ole joints for me personally anyway hope you enjoy em and good luck, oh and by the way I'd buy some blinkers otherwise it's gonna get expensive !...

It sounds like you are starting as I did. I had a series of lessons, with big gaps in between to practice at the range. I played a few par 3s then moved onto a full course. Playing infrequently (once a month) doesn't lead to fast progress, but there is progress. I stopped worrying too much about the score, and rather enjoyed the time outside with my mates. The scores have slowly started to improve. I borrowed clubs for the first six lessons or so, then bought a set of irons on my teaching pro's advice. I've added driver, 3 wood and hybrid to them since, along with an extra couple of wedges and eventually, a new putter.
