Playing some very tasty golf last week, shot an 84 at a new course followed by some excellent play with the Forum Lads.

This week I went out tuesday and scored an embarassing 27 points on the back 9 at my club.

Went out Thursday, full of confidence and happy with my game at cobtree and oh my god, I ended up shooting 102, Ouch!!! Had a few good pars and 3 5 birdie putts but when it went wrong, boy did it go wrong.

Back up to the club for some hard practise next week before the medal next weekend.

Just goes to show how golf can bite you on the arse when you least expect it!

Absolutely agree; my game to is very up and down at the moment.
As well as settling down the slight changes to my swing at the moment, i`m beginning to explore the pyscological aspects of playing; i suspect it affects your performance a great deal; going to try a few drills/techniques to see if it can bring some consistency to my game on the course.

Thats the beauty of the game. Or is that the beast of the game. Anyway I know how you feel jon

4 weeks ago i was shooting consistent low 80's everywhere i played, had a 2 week lay off and come back to shoot mid 90's Couldn't beleive it. Was back down to mid 80's again this week so just hope it continues for next week, I have some good outings lined up.

Jon you sound just like me, you have the game- if all the shots came together in one round you are looking at a great score. It is just the odd round like this that is holding back my handicap and you as well I should think, consistency is the biggest problem I have. I shot 41 for 9 holes 10 days ago and then in my subsequent round 47 for the same 9 holes. As you have said though, there is nothing for it other than practice- I think one of my problems is I don't get out onto the course enough- once a week sometimes less- most of my practice comes on the range.

Hi MWJ,

84 - 102 is exactly 18 shots....coincidentaly 1 per hole.

Sometimes one shot is just that...one extra shot that you need for almost no reason!

Off 19 (i.i.r.c.) I could knock it round in 12-ish or sometimes 30......

The consistency needed to avoid a "bad day" only comes as you get down near single figures i.m.o. It's part of the appeal of the game. I'm chasing 6 pars and 12 "only" single bogeys a.t.m. but somedays I can't buy a par anywhere and make 6 doubles.

sorry to here things have fallen apart for you Jon, but like Rguk says, consistency is what it's all about, i.e. being able to replicate a good swing/hole/round.I have had my moments of glory (85!) and sometimes 2 in a row (85 and 86!!). Sadly nothing like this for months, but I'm gaining confidence and a bit more consistency around my current handicap level, so have to be content with that for now.

And it's that amazing see-saw effect that keeps us coming back for more!

Best of luck

I know how the game can bite you on the bottom. Seems like every time I get it sorted on the practice ground (or pasture of desire as I have now christened it - POD for short) and think I can do well in a competition the golfing gods come in the night and steal my game away.

That said hacked last weekend with my usual crowd but hit the ball much better on Friday without scoring too well (too many unforced errors) and then shot +6 (level par on the front 9 yesterday). Club championship next Sunday (36 holes) so got no idea what to expect but it will be a rollercoaster for sure
