I't's my birthday soon and I'm considering a new set of irons as a treat. I'm currently using callaway big bertha's which were bought off the shelf. I currently play off 10 and I want to know if there is a big difference in custom fitted clubs to off the shelf clubs.

Cheers

There is no actual difference in the clubs themselves. just custom fitting may highlight if the clubs are too flat, too upright etc.

Why not find somewhere that offers a fitting service, pop along and see what they recommend for your build generally and then you will know if your own clubs are correct or not. Once you know you can decide if you want to change clubs or just have your existing ones amended (if required).

Unless you are exceptionally tall or relatively short most clubs will be fine off the shelf. However that is not to say they will necessarily be right in terms of shaft flex, grip size etc. It is best to try as many different options as possible ideally in an outside range so you can see the ball flight and direction rather than relying on a machine

Most has been said, if you are a standard sort of person you may be lucky enough to get your kit off the shelf, but there is no doubt that taylored clubs will be right for you no matter what make.

Caution....beginers can make the mistake of buying taylored kit only to find later that your natural game isnt right for clubs that were measured for your body and stance and early brief swing style, this can change with beginers as the learn the game. before going made to measure see a specialist or a good pro who can sort you out before you spend more cash.

Hard to say 100%. I have tried and failed with a set of custom fitted clubs in the past. For some folk, it can make a huge difference. My custom fit is just a degree upright though so unless I was playing really low, I'm no worse off either way.....

Suggest you look at the Orka web site. They have club builders in various parts of the country. Popular clubs with some of the people here.

Totally disagree Homer. I always believed this being of average height 5'10'' myself, I just always bought off the shelf, got fitted this year for the first time, and had to get 2 degrees flat, and the difference to my game was astonishing.

I'm 6 foot and my Callaway are only 1 degree upright and my R7's were standard lie. I was suggesting that for someone 6"2 and above or 5"8 and below there would be an issue. It also depends on the plane of the swing and length of arms as two of the other major variable. For those that don't want to consider any form of custome fitting my point was that height would be the biggest stumbling block in being able to pick a set off the shelf

Length of arms is biggest factor.
If you're 6'6" with arms like an orang utan then you would need shorter shafts and probably plasters for your knuckles :D

Most custom fits dont actually cost anything so its always best to just book your self in, go in with an open mind and find out which clubs/shafts/lies you hit the best!

I.m guessing playing off 10 your not going to be changing your swing in a big way anytime soon so wouldn't worry about re-fitting too much.

Your still playing with improvement irons though so make sure you try the X20's, they are aimed at your handicap level.

Off 10 ? well I think you will find an improvement and a comfort strait away...UNLESS shelf clubs you have or want fit you like a glove anyway.

I had a made to measure set that lasted me nearly 20 yrs.I buy off shelf now cos the MS has done things to my sensory system and I wouldnt know what I was holding unless I looked at it first lol. My made set of wilsons served me well, its when I got down to 6.
