...I'm thinking about going completely tea total, it wouldn't be a big miss for me as I don't drink that much anyway, maybe a couple of bottles of beer a month and when I go out with the lads, if I'm not driving and given I drive more often than not stopping the booze altogether wouldn't be a miss.

I think as I've gotten older I developed a distinct bad reaction to alcohol, so much so, that even if I take a sip of something alcoholic, I will have a stinking bad head the following morning. So I'm figuring what's the point?

This isn't a new years resolution as I probably won't be drinking anything alcoholic as I just do not fancy it, also I'm driving on new years eve, so not booze then either.

I've still got a bottle of Isle of Jura in the cabinet that was given as a present last Christmas, which is still unopened.

Anyone else thinking about stopping permanently or has stopped the booze ?

Not a chance. I love a good drink.

I do it occasionally, if only for a few weeks at a time. the longest I have gone is 4 weeks. I'm not a big drinker. but I do find that most of my socializing is done in the Pub. Walk the dog - visit the pub. Meet friends - in the pub. Etc etc..

Good luck with stopping though. My Missus is virtually Tee-Total and she really doesn't struggle with it at all....

same as

if its something you feel wouldnt affect your life going forward then go for it. Alcohol can lead to some fun times but also some not so fun, as I well know!

it wouldnt do any harm to having the odd one now and again like you do now. Good luck either way

Drinking is very much like golf - the more you do it and the more you practise, the better you get. I can't remember the last time I had a hangover - or maybe I can't remember what a hangover is meant to feel like.

I stopped about 2 yrs ago and don't miss it at all. Why did I stop? Pretty much like you - I was finding that in middle age I wasn't able to handle it as I could and I just got fed up waking with hangovers. I tried cutting down but then just didn't see the point when even only having a couple of beers meant I couldn't drive - and still woke with a bleedin' hangover.

Lots of excellent non-alcoholic drinks out there (the Belvoir range is excellent); rediscovering Crabbies Ginger Ale and Scottish Raspberry drinks - brilliant with ice and lemon. And non-alcohiolic beers are a lot better than they used to be. My favourite is Bavaria (currently 2x6 pack Sainsburys is £5). Becks Blue isn't bad. I'm waiting for alcohol free draft beers to arrive. Drank some splendid ones when in Berlin a month back.

If having just a few beers affected me like that I would stop too. Fortunately I can still have several beers and be perfectly fine the next day but if that ever changes I would have no trouble binning it altogether as I don't drink that much anyway.

@SILH, Even the non-alcoholic beers give me a headache, though as you say Becks Blue isn't to bad. My dad used to drink Kalibre alcohol free beer shandies, or pints of pee quick as he used to call them :D

Well I guess if you drink 20 bottles of 0.5% stuff you might well end up with a headache :) I go for 0.0% or 0.05% stuff myself.

I used to drink a fair bit until I started marathon training in 1998. Gave it up for 3 months with the promise of a large Southern Comfort after the big race day - tasted foul and I chucked it down the sink! Somehow had lost my taste for alcohol and never really acquired it again. I like the occasional slurp of wine with some cheese but that's about my limit. HID is considering an alcohol free January so have bought some crabbies ginger beer without the alcohol to see if that helps!

Does anyone else find it concerning that there are phrases like "good luck" and "giving up" getting used and other posts about strategies for "not missing" alcohol? It's like we're talking about cigarettes- i.e. an addiction.

No one seems to hear alarm bells following casual statements like, "I need a good drink" or "I've earned a stiff drink" etc.

Ditto although I haven't been properly pi$$ed for a few years I reckon, I also hate hangovers.
I've definitely backed off a lot although I would never call myself a big drinker as such, I don't really go out much these days and with my job I can't be having a hangover on a Monday morning.
During the week we just tend to finish off any wine we have left over from the weekend, we don't buy any alcohol Mon-Thurs.

Apart from Holidays and festives I never touch a drop Monday to Thursday in fact rarely on a Sunday either but I love a good few on a Fri and Saturday, not every week but a lot of the time.

The original binge drinker I guess.

After my health scare in 2006 I was suppose to go tea-total and went dry five years. Spoke to a specialist and was told if I don't go mad I am fine so I restrict my myself to a couple of beers after golf and that's it. I had a rare glass of wine with Xmas dinner and did enjoy it. I could easily switch off again but while the health stays good and in particular my diabetic nurse is still happy for me to do so I'll restrict it to a couple per week

Drink 20 bottles, even when I was out on a Friday and Saturday night in my younger days I couldn't get past maybe 6 bottles or 4 pints, any more and I was bloated and would switch to the shorts.

If I had 20 bottles in the garage today they would last me most of next year, point proven there are still 8 cans of strongbow in the fridge from last new year.

My and HiD or not what you call big drinkers.

I restricted myself to drinking on just 3 days in November as I had got to the stage where I was having a drink just about every night ish (but only a glass if wine on most nights, nothing too bad) and managed OK. December I was back to more booze. Not sure about January yet.

I think just drinking a sensible amount is the way forwards and unless you have a real problem then going dry is not really the way to go. Then again if you get a bad reaction to even a small amount then mostly not bothering seems a good thing to do. And possibly try some hard drugs to replace the buzz.;)

I like a few pints after a game. Usually nothing if its a work day the following day.

I know a good home for the Jura...
