The O’Connor course was the last we played on our 4 day trip and my least favourite partly because my swing stayed in the pub and partly due to the similar nature of shots required on each hole.
Situated at the same complex as the Faldo course it has much fewer elevation changes and strategic bunkering but has water on virtually every hole, more often than not on the right hand side.
As a player who fades his driver I felt like I was constantly hitting the ball towards the water, although the fairways were wide there was a lot of roll so any sliced shot was likely to end up in the drink (a 14 handicapper playing in my group lost 8 balls on the back nine alone).
The last 3 holes of the front nine were my favourite of the day and in isolation a lot of the holes were very good I just felt that there wasn’t sufficient variations of holes and shots required to make it interesting for me, I also thought the greens were a lot slower than the other courses we had played..
All of our group preferred the Faldo to the O’Connor but most people we spoke to out there disagreed with us, they are 2 very different courses at the same complex so I’m sure most people would like one of them (if you play either course on consecutive days you can leave your clubs which are cleaned and put on the buggies for the next lap).
