Hi all,

Currently playing out of Bolton Golf Club, but find myself with a bit more free time and a bit extra cash. Looking to see if anyone else here is local ish and could recommend any other clubs they feel are a level above. Ive tried old link but that wasn’t for me. Ones on the shortlist so far are pleasington and Manchester golf club.
Happy to drive 30/40 mins as long as it’s worth it and the club must have good practice facilities anyone any recommendations.

Thanks!

Membership or visiting? Sandiway, Delamere, Wilslow, Stockport and Prestbury are worth a visit.

In terms of membership for where you are Manchester Golf Club would be my choice. I like Pleasington but think Manchester is a better course.

Played Pleasington earlier this year and really enjoyed it. I would definitely consider joining if I was living nearby.
Beautiful landscape and some stunning holes, apaprt fro the quirky par 5 which is a bit silly.

Steve what is Fleetwood like in the winter? Is it off mats and winter greens? also do they protect the fairways? ie: mats or move to the semi rough?

Thanks for the replies guys, just seen pleasington has a 1k joining fee! Manchester looks and options but I’d also be interested In hearing if fleetwood has mats in winter or if anyone knows of anywhere that doesn’t do mats and winter greens

They move to the side of the fairway I believe.

No mats or winter greens at Lytham Green Drive where we have moved to.

Thanks pal, I think I’m going to push the boat out and try and get a good country membership somewhere so any recommendations feel free, would love a formby etc but know they are hard to come by!

We play off the fairway through the winter months, so place it in the first cut. This year we had a temporary green for the 9th hole on maybe 4 or 5 days, thats it.

We remain open almost all year, certainly more than the other Fylde clubs. Although a lot of work has been done on improved drainage, the first few holes are on more of a clay soil, so do get wet at times. In wet spells we sometimes reduce to 14 holes leaving out those on the clay. The rest are sand based and so remain dry usually.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending Fleetwood. Have been there 6 years now. Yes, it lacks the niceties of a plush clubhouse and immaculate presentation (but they are working on that & have invested heavily on property upgrades), but the course itself is excellent and always a challenge when the wind blows (as it usually does!).

Sometimes, unfortunately, but the prevailing wind usually means the course isnt affected that much. Though seems like its in its final days such has been the local outcry. Everyone is hoping it will shut soon, especially as the lease apparently expires and its getting full anyway.

Fortunately I live several miles away so at home we are not affected by the smell!
