Hi, just returned from a three day mini tour of the Fylde Coast.

16 of us played Fairhaven, 12 for St Anne's Old Links and Lytham Green Drive.

Fairhaven on day one was presented to us in a very scruffy condition with poor greens, terrible bunkers, poor fairways, very wet and no preferred lies.

They also closed one hole for play.

Not once did I look at my ball at address and think to myself "a good lie"

In all a disappointment considering the reviews I have read about the course in summer.

Day three saw us at Lytham green drive...

It was beyond belief that the course was open, even the office staff / manger were wearing wellingtons!

One hole closed, another SI 4 Par 4 turned into a mickey mouse par 3 with a flagstick stuck into an unbowed temporary green in the middle of a fairway.

It was preferred lie even in the rough and all the fairways were unbowed and waterlogged.

The bunkers condition were the worst I have ever seen.

The greens were beyond a joke, it was like walking on a peat bog, they were heavily slit and unmowed.

Day two was a course 4 miles away from the sodden courses of day one and three and was one of the magazines featured hidden gems from this month - St Annes Old links.

On turning into the car park I had arrived in golfing heaven.

A majestic old clubhouse and the course stretched out before us with the pleasure beach in the distance.

A proper links course that smashed my previous favourite Powfoot into second place.

Great service from the staff, a tidy course with proper sand in the bunkers, grass on the fairways, proper links rough, the only thing spoiling it was a nightmare four ball in front of us that took 45 minutes to play the last two holes!!!

One hole was closed for play but the substitute 19th hole was in play.

Congratulations St Anne's for a fantastic course, in great condition despite the time of year with none of the poor excuses of the other two courses.

It was that good we are going to see if we can arrange a three day championship there ( St Annes) next November.

Cheers

Steve...

To be fair, Fairhaven in the summer is a very nice course.

But apart from Royal Lytham.......Old Links is probably the best course all year round condition wise. No amount of rain can spoil this course.
Try play the course when the jet fighters are in training. It'll spoil a few drives/shots or too...lol.
