Ive just got back in from playing a round and I am a bit confused. My previous best score was 84 which I did 2 weeks ago, prior to that it was 89 which I probably did a year ago when I started playing properly (rather than just a few times a year).

Ive been having lessons, and over the last couple of months have made a pretty big change to my swing which has resulted in a much more consistent strike, granted there would still be bad shots now and again, but they were more fats and thins than shanks which they used to be. I also haven't used a driver on the course, ever, I don't think. I got a new driver last week, Big Bertha Fusion (fitted for it), practised at the range a few times and was getting pretty happy with the consistency of it, though still a bit fadey. Today I thought I would unleash it on the course, I was hitting it really well and the extra distance off the tee really helped out out. I only missed one fairway with it too and that was the first hole I used it on.

I ended up going round in 75 (a massive 9 shots better than my previous best), on a par 71 course. 4 birdies, 8 bogeys, 6 pars. I didn't make any silly mistakes, and when I found myself slightly out of position I played safe to pretty much remove the chance of a double.

What has confused me though is the big jump I have made in the last couple of months, I have gone from being really happy to break 90, to a 74. I know it is just 1 round and the hard thing now is to do the same again, but it has really motivated me to carry on the hard work I have been putting in at the range following on from my lessons.

Just enjoy the good round . There'll be plenty of duff ones to come....

First of all, well done on the PB round today. Seems like you have been working hard on and off the course over the past few weeks/months, you mentioned you only missed one fairway today so being on the fairway is a massive advantage to your approach shots. Keep up the hard work and I'm sure you'll be consistently hitting below 80s.

congrats

sure enjoy it ..... but don't not think about it

meaning take some time to sit close the eyes and mentally walk through the whole round not just the shots played but how you arrived at the decisions & choices made to play those shots
how making the swing motions 'felt' - as in maybes more relaxed or smooth, more sequenced in time more balanced, more than usual focus on the target, shot visualization happening - whatever that kind of stuff all 'felt' like

then 'bank' the experience away as proof, a confidence builder, that on that day you could put a score together

- don't though next time out measure what's happening in the round being played against the PB round, as that will screw you -

the golf game day to day is always different, never the same, so no such thing for sure as 'consistency' - what can be more consistent is the reaction to shot outcomes, the mental approach to each shot challenge, the emotional control to events during play

Thanks for that, the initial swing change came from the feedback you gave me months ago, so thank you for your involvement!

I was just very relaxed today, I had no pressure as it was just a stroll round by myself. The big thing for me was not trying to hard to get myself out of the small bits of trouble I found myself in, I just knocked the ball down towards the green with a sensible club and aimed for bogey.

Great round Steve. That's some improvement and hope that it's not too long before you score that well again.

Congrats.

I guess we all tend to analyse everything and for sure there's a difference between knocking round by yourself and then replicating that in competition off the back sticks etc.. However just take it for what it is/was, a great knock and a personal best.

You've seen a glimpse of your potential OP. Enjoy and remember how it felt and pick out any underlying elements that contributed to it. Keep practicing and learning and more will come along.
