Today I headed off to Milton Keynes to meet one of the Directors of Orka Golf to discuss the lack of confidence that I have in my irons and to see if an change may get the confidence back. I should be up front about this, I have had dealings with the MD of Orka over a number of years so not totally ubiased in my comments as he is a good chap. Anyway, I was tweeting about my lack of confidence with my irons so I was invited down to Milton Keynes to meet Alex who is a director and also their highest qualified fitter.

Alec knows his golf, he is a fully qualified fitter and a pro and really knows his stuff. We sat down and discussed my game and what we were going to do. He was very clear that he was not looking to sell me clubs as the figures would decide that so the first step was to see what we could get out of my current irons. We took some figures and then started a lesson. Alex wanted to make sure that I was swinging to the best of my ability with my clubs before trying anything new. He made a small grip adjustment, a shift in weight and a focus of getting a full shoulder turn. We worked on that then on to an Explanar to try and get that all working. What followed was an hour long lesson until I was striking the ball as well as we felt I could with my current irons. Just by doing that we improved consistancy, brought the dispersion down and found an extra 5 yards in distance. Then it was on to trying combinations of Orka heads and shafts. We never really discussed what I was trying but rather focused on the figures and how the club felt to me. The best combination found me an extra 13 yards with a 6 iron and dispersion was down to an average of 9.4 yards (about 15 yards better than I could get with my old irons).

Following that he then put me in touch with a pro who was near to me who he could recommend to carry on what we had worked on and has since emailed me a full set of notes on what we had worked on to pass on to the pro should I start lessons.

So, the day turned out to be so different to what I expected. Alex called it a tune up and fitting and it really helped to see if I could get the preformance that I wanted out of my existing clubs before I thought about new ones. To be honest it is probably the most worthwhile two and a half hours that I have spent so far as my golf game is concerned. It was not what I expected but was so much better and more useful.

Sounds a great experience. Did you do it on trackman and if so where in MK did it take place (or was it his own Trackman?)

Are you going to buy the Orkas or wait until the swing changes are sorted? Can I ask how much the Orkas were (tell me to do one if you want!)

He shares a place with his old head pro, Luther Blacklock. He is not there often as is all over the shop with Orka. Was not Trackman, it was one of the other ones where you hit into a screen and see the visual interpretation of the shot (cannot remember the name but he did tell me). Yes I did buy the Orkas as they were fitted based on my swing with the changes in place.

Ah ok, that makes sense, my current pro is a "disciple" of Luther. Good luck with the new irons, let us know how you get on with them

I had a similar experience with my putter "fitting" on Wednesday. It was a cross between a lesson and a fitting (maybe we should call it a letting?) Anyway, there were no gadgets involved just me hitting putts, him giving a couple of tips and recommending putters that might suit.

Good luck with the swing changes and new bats

GB, I'm going to have to get a game with you once your new irons are in your bag. I really like the look of the Orca irons so would like a hit or two before I decide if it's Orca or I20's that I treat myself too when I get down to my handicap target

I'm confused - your signature suggests you play Cleveland irons and an Okra GW.........

Give me time to change it, they do not arrive until next week. In the meantime the Clevelands have gone (did not work for me) and I am back using my old Cobra SZ irons. I had a set of Orka irons and wedges about 4-5 years ago and getting rid of them was a massive mistake. I only kept the gap wedge as it was not part of the set of irons that I sold.

my apologies - I initially read your post as you discussing your lack of confidence in your (Orca) irons with them (Orca).

my mistake

I am sure they will deliver for you

Hello GB72

Did you use your SZ's for the baseline 'test'?

Clubs you have selected have a similiar look to the Cobra's... I have SZ's myself...

Only heard good of Orka... Seems like you are enthused by them also...

I switched to Orka irons just before Xmas. I decided that I wanted a) a proper fitting and b) something a bit different. So I looked around at various clubfitters, spoke to a couple of local ones to ask what brands they dealt with them made up my mind from there. Decided on Orka as I liked the product range. I've got the PS9 forged bladeswith KBS Tour shafts and they are not only stunning to look at but gorgeous to hit as well. Three of my regular partners have Titleist 710/712 blades and the Orka's are much more forgiving to hit.

Price wise, mine were £535 for 3-PW and that included the 2 hour fitting session as well. The same package from Titleist/Mizuno etc would have been £700+

Yes, I used the Cobras for the baseline test and was amazed at the increased distance and reduced disbursement of the Orkas. They are slightly similar to the SZ irons but the head is not as big and they just look a bit more compact. As I mentioned, I have had a set of Orka irons before and I have always regretted getting rid of them so it feels really good to have a new set on the way.

Whilst not something I tried, I did get a look at the GS5 driver in white and I would be sorely tempted to have one of them in the bag later in the year.
