Well after looking as per the other thread, I took the day off work today and I've spent the last two and a half hours getting fitted for new shineys.

Philips golf up my neck of the woods, an absolute brilliant service, a big big thank you to Martin and Craig.

I went up to the driving range to warm up and hit 50 balls and got loosened up nicely, then went over to Philips and started off with my own 7 iron (CG16) and hit a few shots to get a base line, flight scope averaged my shots out to 171yds carry, launch 21 degrees, then we moved onto the Mizuno JPX825 Pro, lovely club and got some good figures off it, with an increase in distance and dispersion closer. Next up was the PING S55, nice club but it just didn't offer the same feel as the JPX. The I-25 though, that is a nice club, looks nice at address, felt great swinging it and gave good numbers. Then just for kicks and giggles we tried the Mizuno MP-64, Titleist AP-2 and Callaway Apex.

The Callaway Apex, not for me, it didn't feel right and even with a few different shafts the balance when holding it was just not there, I hit a few shots and though the numbers were good, I didn't rate it. Then the MP-64 took its turn, what delightful club, balance, feel, it had the lot and it gave real good numbers. Last up was the Titleist and I really hoped this club was going to sing to me, but it let me down, it was giving great numbers, but it just felt so dead even when I flushed the ball the feel was not there.

Then we had a little bit of confusion with a shaft mix up, so I tried the club I bought with a different shaft option and it became a different club, tried it again with a lighter stiff shaft but still not the same, went back to the original shaft I had tried and the club came alive, the feel was brilliant, the balance superb and it really inspired confidence.

So I'm really looking forward to receiving them and getting out there.

So did you get the 825 Pro or the Ping I25? Oh and what shaft?

I went with the Mizuno JPX825 Pro with a Nippon 1150 Regular shaft, 3 degrees up and midsize grip.

The shaft surprised me, as in my CG16 I have Traction 85 Stiff, so a lightweight shaft but obviously stiff, the regular shaft came about by accident. I was hand the JPX with what we thought was the Nippon 1150 stiff and I rattled a few shots off and they were really good. Then after trying all the other clubs, something didn't sit right with Martin so we tried the JPX with what we thought was the same shaft the 1150 stiff, but as soon as he handed it to me it felt wrong, and trying to swing it, it felt like I had a broom shank for a shaft. So he put in the 950 stiff, which was better on the numbers, but still felt wrong, so it was back to the 1150 regular and the number came back, the feel was spot on.

So a heavier shaft but in regular flex worked really well.

Great choice, I love mine!

You must have a pretty smooth swing!! Your carrying it 170 yards with a 7 iron and your in a regular.... I also guess your a big guy with the 3* up?!

Anyhow you will love them.

When I was fitted for mine the Mizuno DNA offered me x, x and 6.5 but I ended up with regular flex like you... I could just release it better. I also do not hit it anywhere near as far as you.

Enjoy them and thanks for the update.

Congratulations on your impending arrival, bet it's gonna feel like a long wait:D

Hell yeah, hopefully middle of next week, I was told that Mizuno like to get the purchased kit out really quick and the shop I've bought them from have a really good relationship with Mizuno as well.

Not that big at 5'11", it would've been 2 degrees up for any other club, but so I'm lead to believe Mizuno tend to make their club 1 degree down over the standard that other manufacturers use, hence I've had to have 3 up.

The distance was all about the strike, with the JPX's I was averaging 89mph club head and 116mph ball speed with smash around the 1.30 mark and it felt really good when it came out of the centre, as soon as I'd hit the ball I knew it was a bullet and gone. Really good clubs.

Mmm, I consider 89 mph pretty quick with a 7 or 6 iron.... Nice!

Some confusing figures in this thread ( for me ) .......

Your SS and BS and ( 171yds - 7 iron ) carry are up there with Tour Guys
Yet u are getting Regs......??

I know theres NO magic formula.......But , everything points to much different build ( IMO )

89/90 mph with a 7 iron is bang on PGA Tour average

Congrats on the new bats
They are indeed nice looking clubs

I know it surprised me as well, as my current CG16's have a lightweight 85gram stiff shaft, but during the fitting Martin suggested a heavier shaft may help with my swing so we were trying shafts all over 100grams. As Above the JPX825 was the first club tried then the others, we then went back to the 825 and tried different shafts and as above the stiff shaft which you would think would be the correct choice for my swing speed just didn't feel right. The 115 gram stiff was like a broom shank and the 95gram stiff offered little feedback, but then with the 115gram regular I got the best of both worlds, a heavier shaft which being heavier has thicker walls than the lighter 95 gram stiff. So even being a regular shaft it offer more feedback than the 95gram stiff but it flexes the same as it has thicker walls. I hope that makes sense.

Just realised the 171yds 7 iron was your old set....

It's a 6 iron really though isn't it.....;)

How will the new set, new lofts, change your wedges set up....??

The 9iron has 41 degrees of loft my PW is set to 45, so there is still some difference in the yardages both will give. As for the numbers on the fitting:-

Old Set CG16 7iron 31degrees loft 171yds Carry 185 total, swing speed 88.6mph, ball speed 111mph smash 1.29

New JPX825 6iron 29degrees loft 185yds carry 196 total, swing speed 88.9mph, ball speed 116mph, smash 1.32

This has just whetted my appetite for Friday. Off to try the I20 and I25 in various shafts with my teaching pro. I know he's going to put the new TM TP's and Callaway Apex and Apex Pro under my nose too. To be honest I'd be happy just trying the two I models and seeing which is best for me but I am a gear whore and will never turn down the chance to hit different makes and set ups. We've only got two hours booked!!!!! May not be long enough. Good job the G25 woods are staying... unless the I25 is there

Sounds like the OP got a great session and some interesting feedback on different makes and models. It just shows you need to have a good fitter and an open mind. Shame he may not get on a course anytime soon looking at the snow and rain forecast across the UK

My new irons came today , nothing as fancy as everyone else is buying but i love them , cant wait to get out with them , Cobra amp irons

The I-25's haven't started shipping yet, the shop where I was fitted, said they had fitted loads and they were very popular. They are hoping PING will start fulfilling orders and get the first ones out by the 21st Feb.

If you get a chance to try them, give the S-55 a go as well, I was pleasantly surprised by them. I didn't try the Apex pro as they hadn't arrived in the shop, but the Apex was a smart looking club, again for me the shaft offerings didn't give me the feel. That said everyone is different, which is why we get fitted and for you Homer they may sing like Sinatra to you where as for me it was more Telly Savalas. :)

Don't care if the CG16s are cranked, 171 with a 7 iron impresses me.....

....maybe you should have gone for a putter fitting instead

:p:thup:

Enjoy
