Went and had a round first thing this morning. It was raining and very wet on the course. There was no one on the course so I had all the freedom in the world to have a good game as this card was going towards my handicap for club comps.
Anyway... I carded an 86 yesterday and that was about average for me but today, despite the conditions I carded a 79. (43+36).

I have a feeling my handicap might be a touch lower than expected. Suppose I should be happy as I'm aiming for single figures this year... :)

one more round tomorrow for the last card before my 1st official comp of the season on Saturday.

If you had the course to yourself and were on your own then the card wont be able to count towards your handicap as it wont bet signed by playing partner etc.

Or were you planning on forging it?

losttheplot,Indeed. your card will be worthless. No one marked it so forget it. Did you enjoy getting wet for nothing? Did they not explain that someone had to mark a card for you, it that was the case we'd all be off scratch.............

Very valid point made by johnboy17. My understanding is that any card for handicap purposes must be signed by your playing partner.

79 sounds like a good round so it would be a shame if it will not count.

If your card was signed by your partner (I'm not to sure whether you had one or not by your OP) and you didn't mark your own card. Then you will be given a handicap from your lowest scoring card of the 3, no hole counting more than double bogey. In this instance, and assuming your course is more than par 70 you will be playing off single figures.

Couldn't be a bit more scathing could you?

I think he got his point accross quite clearly though!!

Sorry I haven't made it very clear. I had someone else playing. I think I wrote it as if I was just there.
It's a par 72 so I might get given a high single figure handicap I think.

Part of me says to not hand it in because everything came off good today and I might not repeat it. On the other hand I do believe in being honest and also I know I can't hand three bad cards in because that's just not right. The other thing is I am super competitive and am determined to beat the 79 I scored today and know if I get given 7 handicap I will make sure I beat it and will try everytime I step on the tee.

If you get given a 7 hp it is because thats the ability you are after your three rounds,if you wait too you have 3 higher score cards I.M.O you are being dishonest and cheating so you can win a few comps and to me that is wrong. My advice is get your cards in and concentrate on getting lower.

Totally agree, that's what I'll be doing.
It's just that I usually shoot in and around 85 and today suprised me with a 79. I have no intention of cheating and not handing it in. I will see it as a challenge to beat it.

Just to clarify things, I was never going to not hand it in it was just that dreaded thought of shooting myself in the foot with a low handicap when I don't usually shoot that low. (not far off it though)
Just to add to it I did do something different today. I did something that was recommended on this forum which was to hover over the ball and not really ground it. I found this added control and solidness throughout.

Agree with that, get it handed in. I had a similar situation and ended up off 9. You won't play to it all the time but don't beat yourself up about it (like I did). Just go and play.

You might get single figures or you might not, depending what the other cards are. Some clubs give you a h/cap according to your lowest card and some don't. Don't be surprised if you get 10 or 11.

May I ask what conditions you were playing under. Which tees? Was it a "no-pressure" bounce game? Was it a mate or a member of the committee?

If you played off the white tees and there was some pressure (of any sort) then hand in the card.

Personally, I wouldn't be handing in a card played for on a Monday morning without the pressure of at least something.

I could have handed in 3 cards all of less than 10 over par to get my h'cap. I didn't....I handed in 3 cards played alongside members (one including the captain) during a proper comp. It's bad enough them cutting down a bad hole or two to a double, it's not worth getting too low a h'cap just for the glory.

It's up to you; but I wouldn't hand in any cards in a hurry. Play for 3 under proper conditions and accept what you get.

I played off the White tees. I was with a respected member of the club and it was just a normal round not in a club comp or anything. I had a very conservative round of 86 (par 72) yesterday. I was more attacking and with a little more course knowledge (sides of fairways to hit etc) and had the 79 today.
