Was on holiday last week on the Gower Peninsular (lovely beaches by the way if you haven't been) and booked a round at a course there. I will say in its defence that the course I played is lovely.
However the day I had booked it was hoying it down with rain. I checked the web site which said they were on temps on the 2,3 and 4th, but it was open. So as this was the one day I had got a pass out, I decided to play it. So I was charged 40 notes, spent another 20 on a rain hat and another 3 on hiring a trolley. Plus I then spent a tenner in the bar.
The good news is that I had the course to myself and the proper greens I played on were magnificent. The bad news was that the temp greens were no such thing, and were just the hole placed on a flatish bit of ground, often the fairway, somewhere vaguely near the green. You were literally having to put through pitch marks. Not to worry I thought, once I'd got past the 4th green I would be back on the proper ones.
So then as I was on the 7th I was just about to pitch to the green when up zipped a couple of greenkeepers in a buggy and pulled out the flag and placed in on another 'temp green'. Of course they then went off and replaced every flag from then on onto the temps. Which were no such thing, and made putting pointless. So I played a grand total of 3 holes on proper greens.
This combined with the torrential rain was not making for an enjoyable experience. It was so bad that when I finished on the 15th green a sign said '16th tee this way', so I followed the path for about 5 mins eventually ending up on the 2nd fairway near the clubhouse, but nowhere near the 16th tee. So I thought sod this for a game of soldiers and gave up. I could have happily coped with the rain for the proper greens, but not to put on a fairway, and it's the first time I have walked off a course.
I then went back to the pro shop and was not offered and money off but a discount if I played again. In some way it was a nice gesture to be offered some money off another round. But I ended up spending 73 quid there, and only played on 3 proper greens. Which I didn't think was great value.
