I'm on a 3 day training course 7-9th July in Northampton so might try to sneak in a quick 18 on either the Monday or Tuesday evening. I don't know any courses in the area so if anyone with local knowledge can offer some advice it would be very much appreciated

whereabouts you based D4S?

best course is Northampton County, but almost impossible to get on. Collingtree Park (they played the English Open there many years ago and it gets used on the Europro these days) is nice but can be pricey depending on when you play (its also marmite, some like some dont). Other options would be Whittlebury Park (SW of city) - play yellow and red not blue if get an option, Brampton Heath (next door to County) or possibly even Silverstone

not the best of areas for top courses sadly (he says living 10 miles south)

Edit: Whittlebury is £15 all day on a Monday or £10 after 6pm (not sure why but they always seem to have a monday madness promo on)

My course is on the Moulton industrial park, quite close to Brampton (north side of the town). Hopefully should be finished around 5pm each evening so plenty of time to get a round in.

Thanks for the info fundy, I'll ring a couple of those courses nearer the time.

From that side youre best to ignore Whittlebury/Silverstone/Collingtree as you'll have to get across town at the worst time of day

Best option probably Brampton Heath (never played it in summer, drains very well in winter so may be on the dry side!) Other option is Kingsthorpe which is a pleasant enough course, quite short and on a tiny bit of land but usually in good enough condition (its on our reciprocal list). Would avoid Overstone Park personally

Played at Brampton Thursday evening. It's in good condition and a very nice course.

Delapre is also worth a look as it is under new ownership and has come a long way in just 3months.

I played Brampton in their winter series, drained very well, some nice holes, heathland, but it was very slow when it got busy, friendly club though.

were they well run Robin, have pencilled in to try and play some of them later this year

The 1st one was a nightmare, the starter let everyone go as soon as they were ready and the group in front were out of sight, but without the correct gaps everyone congealed very quickly and it was my longest round (5.5hrs) to date and I couldn't play the last 2 holes as it was pitch black!

The 2nd one was better and more organised until we got to the turn, some people ordered food and were collecting it between the 9th & 10th which is a bit of a walk and of course those of us not eating caught up with a queue on the 10th!

The 3rd and 4th then ran smoothly, I didn't bother with the 5th.

We won prizes and vouchers on 2 of the visits which were well worth the hassle, we shared everything amongst our 4-ball.

I'd tee off early, not later than 11am if I did it again this winter.

Thanks for that, let us know if youre planning on doing them again this winter

Are you training to be a cobbler ? Didn't think you could teach an old dog new tricks.

Give me a shout if you fancy some company

Just 1 more needed to make up a 4-ball and then play some or all of them, I think they are the 2nd Tuesday of the month from November.

It's cheap and the food is very good afterwards, the downside is if we teed off too early you can eat straight away but would have to wait for the prize giving, although they will send prizes on.
