My course Blackmoor is in stunning condition at the moment, with the greens the best I have seen them. We have the Hampshire Championships starting next Friday for three days, which ties in with our Centenary this year. We also have Ladies County matches taking place over a week at the end of the month.

Played a stableford today, and the greens had just been cut so should have been perfect. Get to the first green and immediately notice lines of oil going up and down. Second green the same and the third and the fourth.:( We assume the greenkeeper had cut them when they were wet with the morning dew and hadn't noticed the leak. The rest of the front nine are fine, but the 10th, 15th 16th and 17th are also affected. Eight immaculate greens except for black tramlines.

I am not sure what the permanent damage will be, and I assume there is nothing that can be applied to the greens to reduce the damage ? I just hope it is not as bad as it looks, but it is a sad day for the Club.

The green keeper didnt put the cap back on the fuel tank on his mower and spilt fuel all over the pga's 6th. It looks bad

We had a similar problem with our 15th and in the end they had to dig the patch out and re-seed. Hopefully your greenkeeper can rectify the problem
There must be at least ten stripes of oil on every green, plus one all round the edge of the green. If they have to be dug up it will be awful. The oil spots are not that big, about the size of a ten pence coin and spaced a few inches apart.

Im no greenkeeper but seriously how the flapping hell did he not notice over so many greens?

Hope it doesnt cause too much trouble to put right!

We think the greens must have been wet this morning, and the oil was not noticed. Does seeem strange though, and I would have thought they would check a green before moving on to the next one.

I remember a few years ago at Oak Park in Farnham, a greenkeeper put weed killer, or something similar on their greens, and then cleared off never to return.

Whether it is wet or not you would notice,it would show up immediately as if it was glistening........how they never noticed I can't fathom.

When you finish you line and turn you always look back to where you have came from and can clearly see what you have done......one thing you always check for when cutting greens is any visual evidence on the green of a fuel or hydraulic leak.

It's strange how its not on all the greens and I am presuming all greens were cut.....seems strange that, you usually don't get an intermittent leak.....when there is a leak its non stop.

All the greens affected are relatively close to each other. I assume it was finally spotted before the rest were done, but it is a mystery why it took so long. We have had the odd oil leak before but only on one green, and over a very small area. Couldn't have happened at a worse time for the Club.

Happened at my course on the 6th about a year ago. Still not recovered. A spill the size of a dinner plate, then 2 lines running the length of the green.

It's happened on our tees this weekend, but luckily not the greens. Hard to see how the guys doing the cutting can't see it happening.

We have had a dead ring of grass around our second green as the fairway mower blew a hydraulic fluid right around the green. Typical that it had to go just as he started mowing round the green!!
It's healing quiet well now but they have had to keep it well watered while it's been dry.

So is it just cosmetic or does the oil stains actually effect the pace/roll of the greens?
I assume the oil will kill the grass pretty quickly, so the greens will soon have ruts in them. Not sure whether it is just the grass that is touched by the oil, or whether it affects a wider area as it seeps into the soil. Have a feeling it is going to take some time to recover.:(

We was having so,e work done around Christmas time and the plan being used had a hydraulic hose split mid way through coding or scarifying our second green, as the hydro oil is apparently clear he had tested the complete green before it was noticed by by then the damage was done.

It's taken around 5-6 months to recover but this is more so due to the cold weather having no growth, its come back pretty strong in the last 2/3 weeks and I reckon within another 2/3 weeks you won't even know,

Sad news Richard. Unfortunately if the oil is hot when it comes out, it kills the grass immediately - heard this from one of our greenkeepers a while back. The next problem is that any oil on the green should be "washed" away to allow some new grass to grow.
