I'll lay a safe wager we all do it (expect for a few of our forum 'elder statesmen' who have that suction thingy for the end of the putter & the ladies wearing those really short skirts, for some reason they never have to have a 2nd attempt!)
You reach into the hole to pick the ball up in a two finger pincer movement, straighten up and... drop it back into the hole, sometimes we have two attempts and drop them both, before reaching back in & getting it out successfully. But no matter how many times we've dropped a ball we still see this as the best way to pick up a ball from the hole rather than grasping it properly!
Why?

- Someones bored on a Friday
- 'This'
- The forum's gone downhill since xxxxxxx left (or any variation)
- No idea, I'm only answering for a better chance at a fitting opportunity
- I normally chip in so there's a flagstick stopping me getting my whole hand in there
