I'll lay a safe wager we all do it (expect for a few of our forum 'elder statesmen' who have that suction thingy for the end of the putter & the ladies wearing those really short skirts, for some reason they never have to have a 2nd attempt!)

You reach into the hole to pick the ball up in a two finger pincer movement, straighten up and... drop it back into the hole, sometimes we have two attempts and drop them both, before reaching back in & getting it out successfully. But no matter how many times we've dropped a ball we still see this as the best way to pick up a ball from the hole rather than grasping it properly!

Why?

Unacceptable answers:
  • Someones bored on a Friday
  • 'This'
  • The forum's gone downhill since xxxxxxx left (or any variation)
  • No idea, I'm only answering for a better chance at a fitting opportunity
  • I normally chip in so there's a flagstick stopping me getting my whole hand in there

I can't say I have ever had a problem dropping the ball whilst picking it up out of the hole. Maybe you should be tested for Huntingtons disease?

I liked the wee trick Tiger used on the practice green yesterday, stabbing the toe of the putter in and the ball popped out. Normally my ball is wet, and pull it out and dry said hand on grey trousers and walking to the next hole I look like a pee'd myself. Golf towel is usually manky with crud and soaking too. Spare towel needed.

Slightly iffy back and knees, particularly by the end of a round mean you want the minimum amount of bending. Was that too sensible? It is the answer for me and at 45 I refuse to get a suction cup.

I did a variation the other day where I dropped the ball as a walked off the green and toe punted it into the pond.....

Well clearly it depends on if you're using urethane or ionomer coated balls. The likes of your Z Star/ Pro V1 has a much lower fumble rate thanks to the premium soft feel. Like picking up a room temperature handful of butter.

Rumour has it that the new buzz for 2016 is no longer descent rate and micro dimples, but proprietary FumbleSkin coating to reduce embarrassment to playing partners by up to 30%.

:D

Or your 1 of those seniors (yes you, you know who you are) that like to stick their putter blade into the hole and lever it out damaging the wall of the hole

I went to get a ball out out the other day in peeing rain, I usually use my putter for stability what with the hips and and all. They putter slipped on the wet surface and I did a 180 roll and landed flat on my back!!

One of my opponents suggested I get a device for getting the ball out of the hole and I said that was a non starter as my playing usual partners would rip me for it and he pointed out that it wasn't likely to be as funny as seeing me flat on my back!
