I expect to take a bit of flack for this but, hey, what the heck :D

Something that really annoys me is when an opponent slices or hooks a ball so far wide that it ends up on an adjacent fairway. In other words a very inaccurate shot.

But surprise surprise, they've gone so wide that they have a shot back towards the green on the hole they're meant to be playing, and to add insult to injury, they then play a recovery and knock it to 3 feet, sink the putt and win the hole.

Can't really explain why it annoys me so much but it just does, as after all, so long as it's not OOB then it's still in play, but trust me, it just really does wind me up, so there!! :)

I think there should be a penalty incurred for being so far off the hole you're actually supposed to be playing.

*Dons suit of armour and awaits backlash from the big (inaccurate) hitters* :mmm:

Rub of the green works both ways, golf is not a fair sport. Perfect shots get a bad bounce but everyone gets members bounce from time to time and occasionally it works for wild drives, very rarely on my course though

Can't disagree with what you say and almost included it in my OP as a caveat

But it's the woeful inaccuracy going unpunished in a game that is merciless in extracting penalties in most aspects that really annoys me I think. That and the fact that I generally (although not always) hit 'em fairly straight.

Surely any penalty would be applied by the club: i.e by placing white OOB markers down whatever side of the hole. If they choose not to then everything else is fair game.

Remember the US Open in the 70's and the Hinkle tree?!

I'm pretty short and crooked though with my latest driver I'm a bit straighter but even shorter. At my club length of the tee isn't massively important as it is fairly short but you really can't get a lucky break onto an adjacent fairway on any hole but the last.
Can't say the situation you describe bothers me that much though I had slightly gritted teeth when I went down by one hole in the last match I played when the chap I was playing thinned it and it hit the flagstick and dropped dead.

You don't ever wanna play me then cos I do that at least once a round !...:D

ps, the way my drivers been misbehaving lately I actually got it down to a fine art !...

You mean me driving it up the 13th fairway off our 12th tee. Only way to go in a comp :)

Saw you play the 12th fairway once... It was a great drive, don't think it worked out for you though. Stick to your line...

Wonder if the new trees will change your line when they grow up? Maybe you could start using the 4th fairway/tee box!

What about those few circumstances that people intentionally play to the wrong fairway as a planned route and better line into the green.

Hmmm, got my doubts that any hole should be played that way from the tee, however when playing your 2nd from sixty yards off line then it may be possible to convince yourself that you're playing the hole in its most advantageous way.:whoo:

At OP: does it upset you when people win a hole from deep rough or take a drop and can the next to win the hole? It's all the same. As they say, there are no pictures on the score card.

I've done this twice in the last week on our 17th.
Got a birdie and a par from it.
Fragger wasn't impressed
Might do it again...!

Upset me? No. Irritate me when in particular it's done by one of my regular jammy PPs? Oh yes!!!

I doesn't normally bother me but the other week a FC pulled his approach to our fourteenth into the trees but it rebounded into the middle of the fairway. My approach shot was on the line I intended but it took a wicked kick on the first bounce and shot off the side of the green at right angles and down a bank. I couldn't help but have words with my FC (light hearted) about the differing fortunes of his crap shot and my decent shot. That's golf though and you will get your fair share of the rub of the green.

Ill be long gone by the time those new trees are a proper hindrance lol. Hit a corker up there the other week, almost ran out of fairway (was about 1 yd from where the 13th fairway starts!). Nice wedge in and can see all the green as if the bunker at the front isnt there :)
