Right, Last week when playing a 440yd par4 I hit what i consider to be a good drive, approx 230yds down the middle of the fairway. This being a tricky par 4 that I dont usually reach in regulation I thought i'd play to my handicap hit a 6-iron down the fairway and chip on. Well I caught my 6iron bang on the money and with a tiny bit of run it stopped at the front of the green, hence wild celebrations at the chance of making birdie on SI.3.

Well i made par but heres my dilemma. next time i'm left with 200yds+ into the green do i use my rescue (hit and miss at the best of times) or my 6iron that seems to travel between 160-200yds.

I should mention that me and my 4 and 5 iron are not talkin at the moment.... they're just not doing as they're told.

I prefer to underhit a club with too much distance than rely on hitting a club as far I possibly can. Until I could be sure of hitting that distance consistently I would use the longer club.

Minty, you have nailed a 1/100 shot so just remember those ratio's.

Yea you're right. I think on a tight hole i'll stick with the 6 iron and chip on, if theres room for a wayward rescue then i'll go for glory.

Over the range tonight so i'll see what distances i'm hitting!

Blimus - I couldn't even hit a 6 iron(to the bounce) to the lower end of that scale with a run up! usually 140 to the bounce for me with a 6.

What a result pulling that off on a low SI hole.

IMHO- If you can do it again 8 times out of ten at the range then adjust accordingly. If not then just enjoy it for what it was.

3 shredded wheat was it? ;)

i Hit a GIR for a S.I 2 par 4 week before, and it was a top 6 iron that just flew forever, and landed level with the pin 6ft away. Lads in front walkin back up side of fairway to next tee where well impressed and congratulated me acordingly, i just took the compliment and walked on, didnt have the balls to admit it was a fluke, missed the birdy put and parred it.

3 shredded wheat and a can of gazza's favourite drink.... redbull.

I'll post on sunday with feedback from tomorrows round, i'll be over the moon with another 95.

I'm well known for a) hitting it short and b) playing safe.

I was in a comp (mixed pairs) and attempted to lay up a 5 iron on a par 5. Rather wierdly it ended up in the greenside bunker. My partner said it was the best shot she'd seen me play...ever. Me measured it at 219 yds.

I played out the sand and 3 putted in a daze.....

Golf pays you back with some strange stuff sometimes.

Put it down to one of those rare gifts from the golfing gods - an immaculately struck shot as pure as heaven itself. Now realise that sadly it is not likely to happen regularly and continue to play your normal game - solid and within yourself.

If it all goes horribly wrong as you play this weekend just picture that ball flying high and true. It might not make you hole that tricky 6 footer for double bogey but it will confirm that deep inside is a golfer trying to get out

All meant in jest!

Are you sure you hit it 200yds? The reason I ask is that most courses are measured to the centres of the greens so coming up a yard or two short of the green could mean a more repeatable 180yds 6 iron. I hit a healthy distance and have long since given up on taking one less club just for bragging rights, if it takes an 8 or a 5 iron these days, Im happy if it goes where its supposed to.

How many times have we seen this? We play an easy lay-up shot and the ball goes 15/20/25 yds further than normal - usually into the hazard we are trying to avoid.

If only I could get it into my mind to play every shot as a lay-up, I would be a far better golfer than I am. We've all heard the expression "let the club do the work". That's probably what happens and the club is allowed to do what it is designed to do.

Easy game :D :D :D

do you think this is because when we lay up, we tend to play the shot alot less harder than if we were going for the green? probably more relaxed and get much better contact and the club does the work!

tour pros hit a 200yrd 6 iron so its not a surprise if one of us humans pull it off once in a while. All it takes is a nice swing good rhythm timing tempo........

Also, on layup's the need for accuracy is often greatly reduced (providing there are no bunkers etc.) When I played with dave3498 at his course, the best shots I hit were deliberate layups on the par 5s. (1st, 3rd, and some others). A fairway is a wide target with a mid-iron in hand! Trouble is some courses have centre fairway bunkers on par4s at the layup area....this is so unfair on the short hitters. There's a par 5 at Little Aston where the layup is harder than the short to the green (3rd), bunkers everywhere, tempting the 2 big shot bosh to the green.
