Played over the weekend and at the SE KoK event. My driver seems to be 7/10 levels but my irons works seems to have disappeared. Hit the hybrid alright, but nothing under 6i seems to be anywhere near a 5/10 levels. I think about 5 times during the last few games, I have been within 60y and had no clue what to do.. should I go SW, GW, PW, 9i plus would that be hard, soft, flop, pitch, chip.... brain just went gloopy.

Does everyone go thru this or just me?? Watching Homer's effortless game has not helped me. I even tried to rub his knob ball but it did not impart any magic to my game..

Sounds like you were thinking a bit too much about the shot! If you're 60 yards away and can play a nice 56/58/60 degree wedge, then just hit that and forget about flops, pitches, chips etc.

I recently took the approach of 2 types of shots - a full shot (maybe half swing occasionally) or a bump & run. It's one or the other, forget everything else. Works for me 9/10 times. There are occasional times where I need to be more creative, but for the most, with a bit of thinking ahead / knowing where to miss, it makes sense!

Having many options can also mean confusion! If that's happening, pick 1 or maybe 2 clubs and simply use them for all chips/pitches for a while. I'm not a fan of SW for shots off the fairway anyway (too much bounce for me). I'd use GW for high shots and 8i for running ones - at least until the 'feel' returns.

Don't be too hard on yourself - it's early season and your memory is of 'height of season' ability!

Check your fundamentals (GASP and P2 position) with the irons though. It's probably some 'natural' trait that has returned. If it persists...GSAP!

And, without diminishing the achievement, just remember that that was Homer's only good - and was it really that good? - round in the last <however many>! Better to compare yourself with the 'upper quartile' of any bunch imo.

Homers effortless game?? I'm not a homer basher but I thought he was rubbish? That's what he's been telling me weekly for quite a few years now!?

Pick two clubs and just hit it a couple shots on practice ground with them
Don't try flop shots very high risk of doing more damage

Ahh...... how to kick a man when he is down.. love the forum :blah:

I think I did beat Homer on 1 hole. The P5 13th.
Me: Good drive, Good hybrid, Good PW, putt-putt.. simple game
Homer: Decent drive, Helicopter Club Chuck & missing ball, ball found, hit a tree & disappear, wait wait wait, ball reappears on green, putt, miss 3 foot putt.. put down a 7

To be fair I thought you drove the ball really well especially compared to your handicap. If I was being uber critical, I thought you took on too many shots and seemed to forget it was strokeplay. I was being a touch conservative and so a lot of shots were with mid and short irons. Easy to look half decent with those. I didn't think too many irons were that bad but you just didn't put yourself into the right places often enough

Ahh.. spoken like a leather elbow patch consultant... Can you translate that into plain English?

Compared to me , you played like a pro mate, :D I think what Homer is saying is that there were a lot of times when both of us should of hit a short iron to lay up rather than try to get it to the green with a wonder shot or a long iron. Also from watching Homer with this play he did seem to leave himself a nice gentle iron in most of the time. (or I could be talking crap and he means something different.)

That's exactly what he means Guy, I was to conservative on longer holes. Laying up with low irons when could of hit a mid iron and trusted my short game. But you win some you lose some
