It would appear the the course due to host the County Champs for Cambs & Hunts has been withdrawn (Abbotsley). The county haven't been able to find another venue so the event is cancelled for 2014.

Disappointing, and a blow for local women's golf which I'd espect said course to be supporting!

Sorry to hear Amanda, pretty amazed that theres not a single club in the county prepared to take this on, unless the course are being expected to subsidise the day. Would have thought there is some Kudos in hosting the event locally, clearly not it seems. Have to be honest and expect if this was the mens CC then they would be queueing up :(

I find it astounding no new venue could be found. I've heard that even when it was decided to have it as a single day 36 hole stroke-play championship (rather than 1 day of that then top 12 into knockout matchplay) they still couldn't find a venue. We hosted it last year and did feel rather proud of that. Other courses in the county are obligated to offer courtesy tee times for members of the host course over the 3 days too. We do have the smallest number of courses of any county (I think) but even so it's disappointing. More disappointing is Abbotsley withdrawing their course though.

Shocking that no other club has stepped in.

Does Vivian Saunders still own Abbotsley?

I refereed a Cambs & Hunts Ladies matchplay final once.
You always have to be very careful with your public speaking when that organisation is concerned!

Yes V Saunders is still in charge - enough said! Shame that women golfers in the county are suffering...

All because of the idiots running the show, stupid traditions and red tape. Seems to be quite a common theme with golf!

Another example of outdated crap holding the game back. When will they ever learn

I know Vivian from my Surrey years, worked alongside her for 18 months.
She is not to be messed with, also like Tom Watson she has a psychology degree.

She does seem to have tried her best with the County Ladies. She did quite a bit of free coaching etc.
I also know the County Ladies from the mid/late 1970's era, they were quite 'demanding'.
Seems like the 'amateur' ladies did not take to kindly to an ex professional.
They were probably worried about the prizes.

I've heard many choice tales which I coudn't repeat on here! I think there's a current conflict regarding VAT and maybe even affiliation fees that has caused another rift. "Demanding" is an interesting choice of word! My (limited) experience of county golf is they take themselves far too seriously. Get a bunch of women together and things can go pear-shaped with fall-outs and grudges galore - which is why I much prefer the company of men!

I remember a Wilts Ladies Championship presentation when I was sitting with a bunch of teenagers.
One suddenly said 'Doesn't the President look like the Queen'
She was standing in the middle of the room clutching her handbag in a regal pose.

Cue fit of the giggles by the girls which kind of spread round the room.
It ended up with The President more or less being the only one who was not in on the joke.

She was a lovely person and someone had to tell her what all the laughter was about.....she took it as a compliment!

I'm sad and a wee bit angry to hear that Amanda, it's a terrible turn of events. Seems indicative of the disdain in which women's golf is held in some quarters. It's just astounding that an alternative venue couldn't be found.

:(

Yes, I wouldn't doubt that for a minute.

I know it's up to the county to sort this out but it's a shame someone couldn't organise an unofficial comp by contacting all the main players in the county and having a 'day out' somewhere.
Might even be a bit of fun without all the county stuffed shirts getting involved

reading this reminds me of how the women at our club seem incapable of getting on with each. the number of factions, fall outs and resigning membership incidents amongst them really surprised me when i found out about it. for a small number of members they really seem to have a great deal more trouble amongst themselves than the mens section.

my mum suggested that this was the same for the ladies at her club. is this typical of all golf clubs or just the two i know about?
