Nizels golf course

I live about 5 minutes from Nizels and its a good quality course, played it a couple of times (once after the junior masters) and the rough was crazy long and the greens crazy quick.

What do you want to know about the place?

Thinking of moving to the area, and want a course that is good to join, reasonable on the fees, etc.

Wildernesse and Knole Park are around £1700 a year, which is too high. So looking for something lower than this. Like the fact Nizels has a gym as well as that will suit the partner.

I went for an interview there and was really impressed with the facilities, shame they never followed up on their recruitment process!

Course looked good (although wet when I was there) some great looking holes, not a bombers course but would need some well placed shots to be played to score well I think. Not cheap fee's though....

what do you want to know that's not in the marketing blurb etc?

the lady vice captain has a black Ferrari?

Does she?

No, more about the general course, is it good? How does it compare to others in the area? Do you know anyone who is a member? General kind of things... isn't a difficult question.

Thanks Sybez! Thinking of buying in Sevenoaks (tbc), and just trying to do my research....

Its only has a pitching length area for practice (own balls) but literally round the corner is a driving range that's easy to visit. The gym and pool is a nice bonus to the club though.

it may not seem a difficult question but it's hard to get under the skin of.

Adam lives 5 mins away, which puts him at least 15/20 away from his chosen course (similar pricing and course attributes really) - I'm about 3 mins away but 8 from my chosen course and my personal reasons are based on wishing to play 12 months of the year, wishing to play when I want to and having a good warm up facility.I was a member there when my needs were different (and they didn't have the gym!).

Great spike bar environment, and generally a good craic amongst the members.

Knole is an excellent challenge and enjoyable environment; I always enjoy playing there.

Wilderness is a different club financially and still has a £2500 joining fee last time I looked. They have done a lot of work on the course recently and it's regained it's Open Q status.

There are many more depending on where you are going to be based and which days of the week you will be traveling to the course! There are 3 distinct area around 7 oaks that all have different issues with traffic to access different courses.

Nizels suffers terribly in the winter, so as an all year round option its expensive (in my eyes).

I personally really like Darenth Valley, my course (sweetwoods) isn't a billion miles from you but depends if you want to travel. Westerham is fantastic, Woodlands Manor was/is really nice. Poult wood in Tonbridge is a council run course but is great nick, albeit not very long or tough...and can play a lot of temporary greens in the winter. They are currently doing membership to their 18 and 9 hole courses along with gym membership for £1100 per year.

Thanks for this Duncan. So where are you a member of now? Where about in Sevenoaks do you live? Roughly speaking.

I was a member at Poult Wood for 27 years, (and a couple as a member at Nizels as well) playing a lot of business golf around the country as well. Suited me. When I retired I was going to join Knole (filled out all the forms) but happened to visit Hever for the first time and joined there the next day instead.

Westerham failed my access test, as to be honest did Nizels (2 doors down also left N and came to H for the same reason and he's primarily a weekend golfer). Westerham is/has added an extra course and developed it's practice facilities - if you find the course to your liking and are primarily looking to weekend morning play it's a good option.

Used to live on Darenth Valley course most days - I understand it's better now so I can't comment accurately.

You also have Chipstead & Broke Hill to consider within easy driving.

Basic rule I've learnt is to go along to any club you are considering as a visitor, also to make a point of being in the bar around 1300 on a Sat to get a feal feel for the membership.

This is all very useful info. Thanks!

Westerham is fantastic,..

Really? I played there in the Winter and thought it was a right goat track with their crappy black rubber Winter mats. I'm sure its lovely at this time of the year though (aren't they all!).

Nizels was pretty good when I played it in the Winter. Horses for courses I guess.

If I lived 5 mins from Nizels I'd probably join... if it's crap for you then you leave after a year (I'm assuming there is no joining fee?)

I've never played it in the depths of winter, so slight rose tinted glasses for me I guess.

The holes down by the railway line at Nizels suffer most in winter, it was speaking to guys that used to be members that put me off.

Might be too far south for you, but myself and other GM staffers past and present have all been members at the Nevill in Tunbridge Wells, which has just this year canned its joining fee and offers very good tiered rates (21-25 £515, 26-30 £728, 31-35 £942, 36+ £1,272).It's a tightish parkland layout that hosts a lot of Sussex events, and has been in superb nick the two years I've been a member.

More than happy to accompany you for a knock there if you move down this way.

Thank you for the offer Jake! Really appreciate it! Might take you up on that depending on our situation!

Played Woodlands a month or so ago.
Was in very good shape, but I think I'de get fed up with the 10th very quickly.
