I guess I can now run this story. 1984 and I was working for the Woking News and Mail, part of the Surrey Advertiser Group. McLaren had their base just outside Woking town centre, much smaller than the location they have now and I used to go down there for stories every so often because we had a local bobsleigh driver Nick Phipps who used their manufacturing facilities too.
Was down there one day and Niki Lauda was on reception answering the phones with people watching. The PR guy came over and told me because it was that he had lost a bet over a Grand Prix to one of the receptionists. Ron Dennis came over and said I couldn't write about it which was fine but went on to say this would do more for morale round the factory than anything he could offer financially. Most of the people calling McLaren that morning had no idea Niki was the one answering and passing on the calls. He was still there about an hour later when I left and had apparently been "forced" to make the tea for the team as well.
Absolute legend and I will be watching "Rush" again tonight as a small tribute. His actual part at the end of that film makes it a tremendous watch.
