Well... Having just joined a club, I decided I needed to get my three cards in to gain my handicap. I've been working hard through winter, having started up in October, and got to the point where I've consistently been in the mid to late 90s.

Anyway, today I finally had chance to go out with an existing member and played like a complete numpty for the first three holes - 10, 11, 9. No idea what happened or what went wrong, but managed to half pull it together, still finishing with a ridiculous 119.

Gutted.

Getting at least one more card in tomorrow, hopefully two if there are any members around in the afternoon!

Must purely be down to nerves, rushing your shots, focussing on your score rather than your shots or a combination of all 3.

I would say 'tough luck', but I don't think luck had anything to do with your score today.

Focus Daniel-san.

I wouldn't worry. Get the cards in, take what you are given on the chin and then concentrate on getting it down. I am sure it is in there and you just need to not get flustered and rush when you play with others especially in a comp. Get a routine that works for you and stick to it religiously

I know exactly how you feel.

I am a beginner to the game and finished last season 105-110, I set my self a goal of breaking 100 this season.

i went out and had a few lessons with the local pro and all was going well on the range, I played for the first time this season on Friday ... I hit 124 (67 out and 57 in)

gutted

I wouldnt worry, when your feeling confident and know you have been hitting it well on the range the course just gives you a kicking to remind you that you havent mastered it yet!

perseverence is the key and play without worrying about the score. I managed an 85 last year and havent broke 90 since. In fact my last few rounds have been close to or above 100 :(

good luck and most of all enjoy it, the scores will come

We have all been there and we still go there sadly. I play off 12 but lately been playing to 9 but just haven't played qualifying comps to adjust my handicap and then I played Saturday and shot a 92 ;-( ....at least 12 shots more than iv been shooting recently and not to mention the forum meet were i scored 16 points probably about 100 shots but iv been to the pratice ground today and now hitting the ball better and the confidence is back.

Keep your head up and just keep working hard as it always comes together in the end, it just take time and patience.

Cheers for the comments all - hoping to get two rounds in tomorrow but most likely there'll be no members about in the afternoon apparently!

I shall definitely take the 3 goals method into consideration too!

I'm not a member of a club but can understand playing for handicap is an added pressure. A lot of people on here say that playing in medals & 'rounds that matter' is a lot harder than knock about's with friends, so don't let it get you down!

When I first started the best advice I was once given is "Play the shot you feel comfortable playing"

The chances of hitting a good shot dramatically goes down the less confident you feel about it.

So, 200 yards out to a tight protected green. Easy 7i and chip on instead of trying to hit a long iron or hybrid.

Just try to keep things simple and stress fee.
