Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons has been arrested for the rape and sexual assault of men!!

Wasn't this the geezer who was on TV a couple of weeks ago extolling Mrs. Thatcher's virtues after her death?

I wonder what the Iron Lady would've thought about her Champion now??

The "scandal" should at least have the decency to wait until the details emerge and a verdict (if it goes to trial) is reached.
 
Details have emerged outlining what he has been accused of and who the alledged victims are. But as you say there does seem to be a crusade to name and shame asap without any thought whatsoever.

It sells Newspapers mate. People seem to have an urge to see public figures humiliated. Especially politicians.
 
Politicians are the most targeted yes. Whilst it is wrong what the media do the MP's do themselves no favours with what they get up to, they leave theirselves wide open a lot of the time.
 
Should there be anonymity for the accused involved in cases like this?
And I mean all. Not just the celebrities. (is a senior politician a celebrity?)

Yes. Mud sticks and even if someone is entirely innocent it only takes some crazy making an accusation to ruin someones life.

Yes there should.
Not saying that this guy is guilty or not but until proven one way or the other names should be kept fom being published.
My FIL was questioned over an alleged molestation 30 years ago purely as he resembled the description.
He was totally innocent and was able to prove he was in Tenerife on holiday when the event took place on The Wirral.
Should his name have been published?
If it had that stigma would still hang around the neck of of a well respected member of Society.

In a country were you are supposedly innocent until proven guilty anonymity should be afforded everyone, whatever the crime.
As you rightly say muck sticks, and innocent people can have their lives ruined through false or malicious allegations.
 
Even if he is proven innocent then he is still going to have this hanging over him for a long time and he may even have to resign before he's even been convicted. It does seem to increasingly be the case that you're guilty until proven innocent, so anonymity is really something that should be granted to everyone, or at the very least high profile figures who are going to have the press in their face because of it.
 
Cant have one rule for one and one for everybody else. Either nobody is given the right to remain anonymous or everyone is. However as you say there is a possibility that he may have to resign which if he has done nothing cannot be right

None of Stuart hall's victims knew each other. Some of them came forward because he had been linked with other cases. The police often issue a suspect's name to help with the investigation; they have stated that Stuart hall may never have got to trial had he been given anonymity.

You would probably have a different opinion if the police smashed your door down at 5 o'clock in the morning, dragged you off to the nick while the forensics dressed in white paper boiler suits carried out bags full of your clothes and possessions, the whole thing shown on national television and newspapers because someone with a grudge accused you falsely of sexual assault.

Your point about Stuart Hall is valid but does not over ride a persons rights to a fair defence.
