Nick Faldo will be back!

I think he will do well and will suprise a few people, he wont win it but I think the way he plots his way around and it not being the longest course in the world, I would bet he makes the cut.

I can't stand the fella and i hope he and his love child(Poulter) can be grouped together so all the morons that follow these two can watch them kiss each others backsides all day! He ruined the Ryder Cup and I don't care if poults won a few points he was put out in every match cos Faldos ego got in the way at the expense of the rest of the team!

That said Rory was spot on with his comments the other day and anyone that thinks the Ryder Cup is bigger than the majors is an idiot! its an international exhibition match and he should worry what monty thinks cos he's going to play his way into the team and really enjoy it!...its a week off to have some fun!!!!!!

Poulter was the only thing that Nick got right that week and for someone who doesn't rate the Ryder cup it seems to have upset you rather a lot. I do agree with Rory though and I dont think anyones career will be judged by what they do in the Ryder cups, it may add to it like in Seve's case but it shouldn't be the most important acheivement.

What a man....spent ages at No 1 in the world and won a hatful of majors and load of other tournaments. Very driven and focused on the course to the point of being accused of not having a rapport with the crowd. Percieved as being in it for himself and not a team player. Has a sticky relationship with the media who want him to open up and be more human. Splits everyone down the middle - love him or hate him, few in-betweeners. But that's Tiger for you...Oh sorry, this is about Faldo...

It always amazes me how worked up some people get about Faldo. The man remains one of the greatest golfers this country has produced and has a fabulous record. He has achieved a whole lot more than most British pros - past, present and maybe future. He certainly has an arrogant nature and will do things his way, but that's what it takes to be a top sportsman and to achieve the things he did. Tiger is the same. Difference is in UK you get built up and loved until we think you've gone too far then spend the rest of our time smacking you down. Mental.

Same thing happens in most sports - stick our greatest performers on a pedestal to be adored, then abhorred. A shame.

Spot on Molly, well said.

+1 the guy is a legend and deserves the respect of everyone

I'm sorry but i don't go aloing with this "he's British so i must support him" attitude. He WAS a great player but aside from this he's an idiot who brought absolutley NOTHING to the last Ryder Cup Team. I don't really care for the Ryder Cup but i was saying all along last year how Faldo was going to use it as a platform to massage his ego! oh and look what happened! There was no passion from any of our players(apart from teachers pet) and this was down to faldo disrupting a winning team and the rapport it had!

and please don't conpare him to woods, as players maybe, but outside of that give me a break! Faldo never had the coverage/pressure Woods gets from the media and thank god!

Don't get me started!

Seriously though Molly is spot on with his comments.

'Tall poppy syndrome' britain has a history of it....building up our national heroes only to cut them down again it's usually footballers, Gazza and Beckham are two that spring to mind.

The press have always hated Faldo because throughout his career he refused to dance to there tune and play the media game.

To the guy that says we lost the Ryder Cup because of Faldo.....tell that to the 'stars' of the team that didn't perform, Padraig Harrington was seen as a banker for Ryder Cup points after his two majors but was burned out for the cup (by his own admission).

I fear Faldo will not do so well at The Open as he has played and practised so little over the last 12 months, his business and corperate schedule doesn't allow it.

I think Faldo is a legend in British sport and doesn't get the credit he deserves. I'm first to admit that he wasn't a great Ryder Cup captain but he had to be given a chance with his record in the competition.

On his own he is quite simply the most succesful player Britain has ever produced, so what if he isn't a great interview for the press. Lets not forget about his work with the Faldo Series that has already produced tour winners / players. So what if his private life might be a mess which the press love to crow over, quite simply as a golfer he should be reveered. If Seve is Europe's Arnie then surely Nick is Europe's Nicklaus.

I wish him well in The Open, hopefully he'll do a Norman for us.

Now, where did I put that Pringle jumper....?

To be fair to Faldo I watched him in an exhibition match at Millport Golf Club and he did change my opinion of him. He was a generous and friendly guy and was superb with the kids on the practice area before hand.

Still think hes a complete numpty after last years Ryder Cup debackle.

Crowd puller? Get away hes a washed up long finished golfer, never a legend of the game in a way Watson, Jack, Player, Arnie are. These guys all had charisma to go with their golfing ability and flair.

I'd still rather follow Faldo around the course than the vast majority of younger golfers these days and I'm not a Faldo "fan".
Say what you like about him, in his heyday there wasn't anyone to touch him.....the guy is massive both in physical appearance and reputation. I would guess that just his presence on the first tee was enough to give him a hole or two head start in any matchplay situation.
He has been the countries most successful golfer ever. Credit where it is due. So he cocked up his selections for the Ryder Cup. You've already said the Ryder Cup is an exhibition match, what counts are the majors.
So Faldo wins
;)

Pinseeker....you can draw many comparison's between Tiger and Faldo or you can ignore them because they do not fit your argument.

I agree that Tiger has attention and pressure on a bigger scale, but it's all relative. When Faldo was No 1 you did not have prize funds in excess of $1m, sponsorships the size of MP's expense claims and half a dozen golf channels per country looking to fill hours of air time, let alone the magazines, papers and general fans. Nowadays its golf 24x7 and a tournament every week - how many of which take place without a mention of TW? My point is that when Faldo was No 1, golf was not such big business. How many former players commentating say they made £20k for winning a tournament in 80s and now they play for half a million? Much bigger deals will generate much bigger interest and greater demand and greater pressure. The constant is the way that both Faldo and Tiger deal with it - single-minded ambition to succeed for himself first, others second, the media last.

Tiger has now made himself into a Brand the way no man ever did before and has really reaped the benefits generated by Palmer, Nicklaus, Faldo, Seve and the Shark. When he hangs up the sticks, he will also make a fortune from course design and the like. Faldo's done the same, as have many others. With Tiger, his Brand will generate more expectation - just look at the scale of his Dubai project! These two are not so different in my opinion.

As for the Ryder Cup, we lost because the Americans stepped up their performance and because a number of the European players did not perform. A lot to be said for motivating the team and man-management and I am sure that Faldo accepts his part in that, but most of the players will see it as their fault rather than his. I do think he made some mistakes in the order of play on the final day, but if he'd pulled it off, we'd have been calling him a hero....for a week, then having a pop again soon enough!

I like Tiger a lot. I really like Faldo as well. Good luck to both of them at The Open!

well said molly although i disagree with your 2-5 para's!!! lol.

No, fair point. I liked faldo as a player and i am a massive tiger fan although i'm not interested in what he's got to say in interveiws because he so gaurded now he comes across as being quite dull but i really enjoy watching him play. Faldo just irritates me! his total approach to the ryder cup was all wrong. His famous last words "I'm going to do it my way" well to be honest Nick why say that!! your the captain of course your going to do it your bloody way!

I hope tiger spanks his ar$e! and the rest of em! i wont be cheering for a home player because there are none that excite me. Rory is getting there and will be great to watch in the coming years
