Following the 'what to look for in a good course' thread, it got me thinking of the little bits of finesse or extra nice touch's we see when playing regular amateur golf

  • On picking up my scorecard to find my name embossed on the front of it was pretty cool (obviously tee was booked in advance as they couldn't have done this on a roll up basis :D )
  • Chilled face towels I think are pretty common now
  • Ice cubes in the urinals still amuses me
  • Golf carts that slow down & warn you before driving into big hazards is nice
  • Complimentary ice tea/fruit/cookies at the turn
  • At one course there's a lady who brings round little cheese toasted sandwich squares (not sure why but its a nice touch)

What have you seen/had?

My local muni does much the same, but they bring round canapes of smoked salmon and creme cheese instead of sandwich squares.;)

Closest I have got is playing at The Blue Monster with a member where they could not do enough for you, names on a card on the front of the buggy when you got to it, mates clubs were cleaned and ready for him as were my hire clubs, lots of drinks on ice in the ice part of the buggy, staff very obsequious towards us both.

I won a comp a few years back to play in a scramble at Bearwood lakes with MikeH and David Howell. On arrival my clubs and shoes were whisked away from me and cleaned. Shoes went into the changing room and clubs to the practice green.
After the game they were duly whisked away and cleaned again before being put back in the car..

Wish it could be like that all the time..

Why would clubs/shoes require cleaning before a round! <<not serious golfer smiley>>

We had this same discussion on Sunday night in the pub in regards the "extra treatment" when arriving at some clubs

Some like it , some feel a bit embarrassed by it and some aren't fans of it

I know it happens at most courses in America - the nice touches are part of the expirence for them.

I'm easily impressed :-) Played at Woburn in the Nespresso Trophy and we arrived to see a big scoreboard with our names in lights. Proceeded to the range to find a pyramid of balls to hit - loved it! Whenever I play any course that has a ball washer on every hole with clean soapy water and a towel then I'm a fan :-)

Yeah big fan of the pyramid of balls too

Was at a comp about 2 months ago where they had a fridge full of pots of Ben & Jerry's ice cream at the 1st tee

Yikes - I'd never leave the first tee box - or at least not until the fridge was empty!

I like changing rooms with nice fluffy towels.

When we had a forum meet at Beau Desert they sent the club captain out to one of
the holes and he was telling us the line to the flag.
Of course I didn't realise he was the captain and thanked him by calling him "Marshall".
A nice touch though.

My PP won 6 kilos of the stuff for nearest the pin, due to overloading on the day I still have a tub in the freezer to get through!

6kg - wow - I'd suffer an ice bath for that and fill it with the stuff :-)

That's made me think of the swans at our place eating the weed on top of the ponds with real gusto - figured that's like having a bath in your favourite food, so B&J Peanut Butter Cup would work for me.

I think I'd feel a bit awkward about someone taking my shoes to clean them etc. I liked the less demonstrative but friendly welcome at Castle Stuart where they pointed out the range and practice area with free balls.

where is this 'common'?

I did arrive at a 1st tee once to have the starter ask me "Clean your balls sir?" done as a joke and broke the ice nicely.

Before the round yes :) but after a round its a nice touch, and to be fair the guys are pretty hopeful you'll tip them for doing it

At Skibo, there is a locker with your name on at arrival. In the locker was a goodie bag which includes a rather large bag tag with your name engraved on it.

Everyting is provided, from decent balls on the range to drinks and snack in two huts on the course. When you finsh your round a guy takes away your clubs and shoes and cleans them.

Only thing is they charge £1200 for a 4 ball, so you would expect to be treated well.;)

crikey...some people have played some places with a great experience. My limit is the twentyten at Celtic Manor, where your clubs are taken away, a tour of the clubhouse and changing rooms given, and then, when ready, bussed down to the practice area where you can hit balls before teeing off for real.

Everywhere else I have been has been fairly normal, rock up and play with no specialties...even The London Club

That's only just a little more expensive than you and three of your mates entering the Trilby tour.
And for that, you'd all get to play a really good quality course and receive a superb new outfit.
I'm out.
;)
