After more than several years on a hiatus from golf, I'm back practicing and playing. I'm enjoying it all immensely but the tracks I'm playing on at the moment are average at best and absolutely rammed (5 hours yesterday).

So as I've said in the title, I'm looking to join somewhere... not ridiculously spendy, a decent test of golf (6000-6500 yards) and above all friendly... I'll be joining somewhere all on my lonesome and have heard the odd horror story about folk struggling to get a game.

I live near Richmond, but a lot of the places nearby are quite exclusive and expensive so I'm casting my net wider... a blast down the M3 won't hurt at all if it means finding the right club.

I'd really be interested to hear suggestions from you wise folk!

Depends on your budget mate. You are into some prime golfing real estate there!!

If cash was no barrier you could go for something in the west hill category, if you're on a more realistic budget then somewhere like mill ride would be a good bet.

Homer will be on soon pushing the benefits of royal ascot, which may be another option. It seems like it has a decent club ethos.

Hartney Witney / north hants may be worth a look also

Windlesham is only about a mile or so from Junction 3.

Certainly adequate course with some really good (and a couple of funky) holes.

Friendly folk whenever I've been there.

Camberley Heath isn't that much further either. Great course, nice folk. Not certain of price though.

Blimey, it'll be a long list round this neck of the woods. Closest to J3 is Windlesham but Camberley Heath isn't too much further out. Of the two I prefer Camberley and I think they are both in the same price range at about £1800 a year. Further afield you could join Homer and I at Royal Ascot which is a bit cheaper, the course is probably not as good but is getting better, is a decent test of golf and I doubt you'll find a friendlier club in the area.

You've then got Mill Ride which is 6800yds off the back tees and Bearwood Lakes which is a bit more pricey but a cracking course. You've also got the Berkshire, Sunningdale etc etc. All depends on how much you can afford really.

Further towards Richmond you have Fulwell, Hampton Court, Ashford Manor that I can think of that are at M3 J1. I'm sure there are other as well but not so well versed on courses in that area.

Hi TheDashingBlade
I'm a member at Hartley Wintney - joined last summer when I moved to village (from Kingston) and have loved it. Fits all your criteria. No joining fee £1080 a year. Masses of comps, great social club, good ale. Lots of roll ups, drawn medals etc means you get integrated easily and very down to earth membership.
My mate lives in Weybridge and joined this year and finds it the drive down the M3 is easy.
If you fancy an introductory game drop me a mail and we can have a knock
cheers
Mike

Forgot about HW, played there a few times and always enjoyed it.

Second this - both courses are more than adequate and far from up there own back sides. Perfect to get back into the swing of things. I'm not sure on costs but anywhere along that corridor for a half decent track is going to drain a little bit on the finances due to the location. Good luck

Never played it - though observed a hole or 2 when playing Cricket next door. Certainly seems a candidate!

Is the the guy recommending it trustworthy though!

For a decent test and a really friendly club and a chance to enjoy the facilities for a 6 week trial basis for only £149 before parting with any large amouts of dosh check out my home club. http://www.royalascotgolfclub.co.uk/

Not as good as some mentioned but the course is definitely tough enough for most and improving hand over fist with the new greenkeeper in charge. Plenty of comps, roll up games on offer and a great banter in the 19th

The Fulwell is nice, as is Sutton Green, although not sure how close the latter is to you.
