Newcastle-Under-Lyme...ok or not to stay and courses?

Looking around as to where we can go for our annual society golf trip.....

Last few years we have stayed in travelodges,and looking at the 1 in Newcastle-Under-Lyme....

So,after any info on the place ie,is it ok for our base to stay at,close to centre and bars and is it ok at night??

Also ideas as to which courses you would recommend around there...

It's a university town so I would guess the night life would be ok,
