had some time spare today and decided to go into Golf Galaxy and have a swing with the new M1 & M2. They have got a full range of custom shafts to try so I knew it was going to be interesting. Went into the net and did what I usually do, got warmed up with a demo iron before getting into the driver.

So usual way I test out new clubs. Got my SLDR and hit 10 shots, took out my 2 shortest and 2 longest to try and get a realistic average distance, don't want that 1 in a hundred swing that is as perfect as perfect could be interfering with the results, likewise I do not want that one crapy swing thet launches like a wedge into the air either.

After much messing around with different shafts, head lofts and alterations I settled on a 9.5 M2 with the Stiff Black Tie shaft set to 10.5 to open the face up slightly. Great results, similar dispersal to my SLDR but was going about 10 yards further.

Then I tried the M1. Played around with different shafts and the best shaft was the 65g Stiff Project X HZRDUS Black. Sliders where set to slightly open and neutral on the launch. Dispersal as good as my SLDR and the M2 but this was going further than the M2 .

So tried some more shots with the both the M2 and the M1 and the M1 definitely won in the distance department, I found I was getting too much spin on the M2 and going a lot higher than the M1, probably the main reason I hit the M1 further.

I ended up walking out with the M1 fitted with the Stiff HZRDUS shaft and now can't wait to take it to the range in the morning before I play and give a little fine tuning

For those that like some numbers here are my average distances and my Sunday best hit with each club:

SLDR - 272 & 289
M2 - 281 & 302
M1 - 288 & 313

Impressive! And good that you get to try such a wide variety.

please tell me those are total and not carry? We all hit different distances and you're already away from me, but if my Sunday best can't quite catch your average (total for me) I may have to go eat a whole box of wheetabix!

Nice. Sounds fun.

Wish I was consistent enough to produce measurable stats. At my level it's a combo of stats and gut feel !!!

Enjoy

They had the HZRDUS Black and Yellow, Black Red and White Tie shafts, Speeder Evo 757 TS, Aldila Rogue Black and Silver 60. Plus the standard off the shelf Fujikura. Interesting thing I noticed was that the custom shaft options where 1" shorter than the standard shaft.

That was total distance. The carry between the M1 & M2 where very similar, but the M1 was getting a flatter rainbow style trajectory and going a bit lower so was getting a better run out.

I must say I that big rip with the M1 took 4 attempts of giving it a good rip, we'll not talk about the other 3 that would have been deep in the trees.......

Lol. My big rips invariably end with me dipping and smashing the deck with the club head and saying the crown!

So does this mean that sldr loft up is officially dead and it's all about low spin. Until the next campaign.

Did id you not consider the epic after it's reviews?

I think the SLDR loft up campaign is dead, but these new drivers are definitely launching the ball higher, so that eliminates the need for the extra loft to make it carry right out there. I have gone 2* less loft with the M1 (9.5* set to 8.5*) over my SLDR (12* set to 10.5*)

I did give the EPIC Sub Zero a hit but wasn't impressed with it. I've never liked the feel of Callaway drivers, not sure what it is. I gave the 917 a hit too, but again preferred the TM M clubs.

I realise this, But it was sold on the back off a big loft up campaign, not its low spin chracteristics.

Your right, it was all about the "loft up for more distance" and "tee it high, watch it fly" movement that the manufacturers went to. Put that with the low spin characteristics and you had an accurate long hitting driver.

Now it feels like they have managed to make the new drivers naturally launch the ball higher, so no need to loft up anymore.

I believe you are right!

The low spin nature of SLDR caught some (naturally low spin) folk out! So the overall effect, for them, was shorter carry and less overall distance! The solution - for them - was to 'loft up'!

Took it out for a maiden voyage on Sunday and it was very impressive. ON one hole I caught it high out of the toe, but it still went as far as my SLDR would have normally gone with a good hit. It might take a little bit of getting use to after using the SLDR for 3 years with it being a 460cc instead of 430cc and the profile being a lot different to look down on, but it is a lot longer and more forgiving than my old driver.

Good days ahead from the tee box........:whoo:
