Hi all. Taking up golf for the very first time. Got a couple of lessons booked and just wondering regarding buying clubs..... Do you to basically build your own set? Not many places do full package deals and if they do its offerings brands I've never heard of before..... I will obviously be waiting until I have had a few lessons first before I do decide to buy. But just wondering how do you go about getting a set together? Buy the irons separately from the woods etc? Any advice much appreciated

thanks

Speak to the guy giving you lessons in regards to what to buy, but generally, your set of irons will be separate from your Driver, Woods, Hybrid/Rescue, Wedges and Putter.

Ben

Make sure you are able to try before you buy I believe it's really important that anyone who is buying clubs does this. Don't rule out second hand. To be honest I would never buy a package deal.

As someone who came to golf later on and went through the same scenario I would suggest borrowing some clubs first off if possible to get a feel for what you like. First set to buy, go for a second hand set of classic clubs, Pings, Callaway, Taylormade, regular shafts. After a year or so you will have a far better idea of what clubs suit you and which you like the look of. You can then either keep your original set as they suit you already or sell them and buy the ones you want. Clubs from the main mfrs keep their value exceptionally well so you may break even on them even after a year of usage.

Think of golf clubs like cars, a 3yr old Merc E Class, Ping, or BMW 5 series, Callaway, is still going to be lovely and will be nicer to use than a new Kia C'Eed, Dunlop. You don't have to start with new clubs, no snobbery on that front.

As others have said, don't worry about getting a mtaching set of woods and irons. Most golfers mix and match to what suits them.

Take your time, don't rush into the purchase. Enjoy and welcome.

Don't buy new! I just bought a set, 3 to 9, of Mizuno MX23 in excellent condition, for £80. They were around £500 when new and, quite honestly, the small improvements made since they were produced won't affect anyone at all. Doing this, you could use the clubs a couple of times & chasing them if you wanted, if you find an accommodating pro with a good stock of used clubs.

obviously Strictly dancer comes above world cup rugby winner and/or world cup football winners nephew lol

Yeh exactly!

Welcome to the Forum ben. even if you are not the one with a world cup winning medal, we will treat you the same!

(I joke, if you are actual Rugby Ben Cohen, can i be your new BFF?!)

hello and welcome. enjoy and ask away any questions youll get plenty of opinions on anything on here.

With regards to your club question very few people buy the package sets, pick up a set of irons a putter and the woods /hybrid that fit you best as you go. As already mentioned speak with the pro at your lessons and seriously think about used to start with.

Chat to your teaching pro. Personally I'd veer away from any starter set you can get in Argos, AG or similar. As you progress and improve you'll soon outgrow these and they aren't necessarily the greatest quality ever. Plenty of second hand sets around or you could look at a half set to start. Your teaching pro will give you all the advise you need
