How long do you guys think it should take a beginner to actually get scoring down to handicap levels. I understand 28 is the max for men but that wouldn't yet be acurate for myself. I generally play twice a month due to shift work and two or three range visits and putting practice a week.

I plan to play at the Legends course Orange Lake, Orlando with my Father in September and whilst i don't expect to win i hope to do ok even with the extra water hazards. I currently hit the odd par or bogey but generally average 2 or 3 over par a hole.

Don't want to put a spanner in the works but have you checked with the course that you don't need an H/C cert. to play there?

no-one can say how long it takes to get down to a handicap as it is different for everyone. much depends on how much you are prepared to put into it and what ability you have.
some (and I hate them) just have to pick up a club and they're instantly away; others work at it - sometimes for years. that said I got mine in 12 months, but as I say others are quicker.

I'm not sure if you want a legitimate h/cap or just to reach the standard. If you want a legit one then you need to join a club or use one of the on-line methods.

I guess the easiest way to see where you are standard wise is to put a couple of cards together making sure you hole everything (no give me putts) and see what the totals are.

As a beginner the best advice I could give you is not to worry too much about practicing until you have had a couple of lessons with a pro to get the basics right. If you can practice with the correct grip, stance and alignment from the early days it will get you into good habits early on. Later in your golfing life if your swing goes astray it will be easier to fix if you have a sound set up

what are you going round in now then?

How often do you play?

Do you have lessons?

Are the problems off the tee, fairway, fringe, putting or a fair spread of all conditions?

I think it might be a big ask to cut a huge amount of strokes off your score in a short time without intensive lessons and playing. The pressure of trying to do so won't help either.

Ive been messing around at the range and muni's on and off for years, only been a regular club member for about a year and just starting to get my game together now. Unless you're a natural it seems a fairly long grind might be ahead.

Its taken me (and 2 friends) about a year. One more talanted fella that we play with just lifted a club and after a few rounds has a 22hcp.

It is a function of co-ordination, skill, concentration and lots of other elements that I dont have.
