So I'm totally new to golf, litteraly clueless. Recently started playing pitch and putt and liking it a lot more than I thought I would and want to start heading over to driving ranges to practice actually hitting the ball straight, so soon I can maybe start playing on some proper courses. Been looking to get a set of cheap golf clubs just use while I see if I carry on enjoying it and want to carry on playing, but don't want to spend much, just a cheap set will do to start me out. But like I said I don't know anything about clubs, here are the couple of sets that I'm considering buying as they are close and I can pick them up. I know they are probably really bad from what nearly all of you play with but they will do me for now. Just want to know which set looks like the best to buy as I know nothing. Thanks!! :)

To be 100% honest the bottom set look like the better set and for 25quid you cant go wrong.

They look like game improvement irons and will help you get the ball in the air. Enjoy your golf fella ;)

Hey mate, welcome aboard

I'd probably go Hippo's, but.... that's just because I know a couple of lads starting off that used them, I had a nice set of Dunlops.

You couldn't go wrong with any of them just looks like you'd get more for your money with the Hippos I reckon.

Look for clubs that are a wee bit more "forgiving" a word you'll hear plenty about. Basically that look a little fatter at the bottom and deeper from the front to back.

Golf clubs are such a relative and subjective and personal thing there is no right or wrong really it's what suits you. What feels comfortable, the more you get into it the more personalised or tailored your clubs can be.

Working on the assumption that your a man of average build and height then a standard mens set with "Regular Flex" Shafts should be fine. Although im sure most Hippo sets come to that specification.

It can all be a bit overwhelming I know but when I started It was like learning a whole new language

Avoid spending a fortune I know too many folk who rushed out and have 500 quids worth of shiny metal gathering dust under the stairs

And dont avoid going to play on a big course because you feel like you are not ready, pick the quiet times (late afternoon) every golfer started somewhere

Thanks lads so far! Thought I'll add some pics, just in case some people can't use the links.

Welcome!

Agree that the 3rd set is excellent value at £25. I started playing golf in my mid 30s, after a few visits down the local driving range and a few 'lessons' off my Dad I signed up for 6 lessons with the local pro. The lessons really helped with sorting out the basics, grip, how you stand, swing etc. I find golf to be one of the most frustrating and most rewarding of sports and one of the only sports , in my opinion, that combines strength, agility, coordination, finesse, strategy and of course humour!

As stated here often, EYG, Enjoy Your Golf. :)

when I started I bought a full set of MD Tour steel irons/woods & bag off ebay. Done me ok for a few rounds and range sessions then I got addicted to ebay and the rest is history :D

I actually still have the irons but as they are graphite shafts my machismo forbids me from using them for another 20 years :D

Which ever set you get practice, practice, practice and just enjoy it. Dont rush onto a course as it can be soul destroying early doors or if you do pick a shortish one that wont beat you up to much.

Good luck

Agree set 3 has all you need to see if you like golf or not :), isnt it incredible you can get sorted out for a complete set for £25! Unheard of when I took up the game.

Welcome along. Once you get your clubs (I'd go for option 3) get yourself a few lessons. If you get the fundamentals sorted at the very beginning then you will have good foundations to build a lifetime of golf on

Really appreciate the help! Bought set 3 as most of you recommended I should and got a cheeky discount :P Will be picking them up tomorrow. Thanks Again! :)

Ben,

Great news on the clubs (not sure I'd be cheeky enough to ask for a deal on £25 asking price but well done you!).

I'd really recommend getting some lessons early on - I've got a number of habits that are really causing some problems now with my golf that are ingrained into muscle memory so are taking some correcting.

A number of places do a set of 5 or 6 into lessons, often in a group, for reasonable money and will set you off in the right path.

So, welcome to the forum and enjoy your golf!

Simon
